A few weeks ago I bought a puppy from a pet shop. It was sick at the time and they gave me medication. Two weeks later and I've had to take the puppy to the vets a few times and get more medication for her. Does anyone know the law regarding this and whether the pet shop should pay for the vet bills and medication for the puppy if its still the illness she had when I bought her?

I didn't think "pet shops" sold puppies these days. Not outside of children's stories or novelty songs, anyway.

Why did you buy a puppy that as ill. What is a pet shop doing giving you medication are they qualified. Perhaps you should do what they do with faulty goods and return the puppy.

You knew you were buying a sick puppy to begin with??? What do you really expect from a Pet Shop? Report the pet shop for selling unhealthy animals to your council, rspca, not sure about trading standards. What is the issue with the puppy?

Lesson learned on both counts I hope. This may be of interest: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/208 Hope she's soon on the mend.

When you say sick, what excatly was wrong with the puppy? Did you have her checked out at the vets when you bought her? I didn't realise that pet shops could legally sell puppies so I would definately be seeking advice from the RSPCA inspectors if I were you.

Sorry to sound harsh but you took the puppy on knowing she was ill. She is your responsibility and if you can't aford the vets bills you shouldn't have taken her.

When I got her I was told it was just kennel cough and they were happy for her to go home as it would go away quickly but it developed into more despite the medication

I would seriously question anyone willing to sell a sick animal. You really should report it to the RSPCA or local council. I hope the puppy is feeling better now.

Thanks for the replies I think I will get all my evidence and bills together and take them to the pet shop and ask them to cover the costs if they don't I will report them to the local council and rspca for selling sick animals

even if they do you should still report them , it probably came from an illegal puppy farm

It is so obviously the product of a puppy farm, disgusting people the 'dealers' are, for every pup you buy op another one has to be replaced.

I hope your puppy recovers, I would consider getting some pet insurance, this could end up expensive for its whole life.

and this is the pet shop they are talking about in the link I previously posted

http://www.dogs4us.com/

They get a delivery ever week of each breed, from a puppy farm

Report them anyway. What they did was wrong. And you won't be the only one who has bought a puppy from them who has turned out to be ill.

Hope the pup is all recovered now

There are at least 4 pet shops near me that sell dogs. I wouldn't get one that way but there is obviously a market for it.

Yes, those are the links I put up for where the dogs go after the puppy farms in the investigation.

They are in Salford and Leeds

Sorry I should have said, the first link is upsetting, my apologies to everyone again.

The second link is just the actual website for the shop. If someone did look at link one then its interesting to see link 2 to see the contrast of how they appear to come across to people when really they are funding and keeping puppy farms in business.

The issue is people keep buying from shops or ads on the net and therefore there is profit in it for these scumbags.

Why you'd want a pedigree from them (or at all) is beyond me, most pedigrees are so inbred that they have major genetic issues anyway, and these farms make the gene pool even worse. It's a shame because the good pedigrees out there are beautiful dogs, but tbh a mutt can make you just as happy, at a far lower cost (to the pups and you!)

agree with all of the above, butI suppose people just don't realise. Good on you to keep publicising the problem.

Hows the puppy, OP?

I'd report the pet shop!

Amber is a per shop cat and was sold to us with a nasty dose of cat flu.

Luckily we took her to the vets to be checked over immediately and it was diagnosed so she only needed a course of antibiotics.

I went back to pet shop, the shop girl was most unhelpful so I told them I was reporting them and I did. I have never been back so don't know if it made any difference!

Forgive me if I'm missing something here, but you bought an animal that was ill, the pet shop admitted it was ill, they gave you medication for it because it was ill, and now you're surprised that it's ill?

You should have reported the shop immediately. Puppies don't get kennel cough unless they're kept in poor conditions.
