I guess that with Dave Woods working on the tv world feed they may have needed Oates to work on the super league coverage on 5LSE.
That will almost certainly be the case, as well as 5LSE he'll also be needed on the Super League Show on BBC TV in the North of England. I don't think David Oates has ever worked on Radio 5 Live's coverage of a European Championship finals, presumably for this very reason.

I might be out of step with quite a few of you on here, but I think Alistair Bruce-Ball is one of 5 Live's stronger commentators. He has his own style and mannerisms which for me sets him apart from other middle ranking commentators like Oates, Nigel Adderley and Dave Woods who I find can sound a bit samey. Obviously the review into 5 Live's football coverage has been an unpleasant process but I'm glad ABB was among the commentators to be retained by the station.

ABB is competent but a bit cheesy for me. The other 5 are better commentators. I'd like to hear Ian Dennis commentating but he is stuck in the England camp which is a waste of his talents IMO.

I agree. nothing particularly wrong with ABB but i just think he's the weakist of 5live's commentators.
yes, its a shame Ian Dennis isn't used for commentaries more as I actually really like his style.

interested to hear some of absolute radio 90's alternative euro 2012 commentaries. not something i'd want to listen to for long I suspect but an interesting idea. I believe there has been alternative commentaries in the past on the bbc red button-- didn't chris moyles do one?

Yep, him and Comedy Dave did 2/3 for the WC in 2010. Talks are ongoing about doing some more this time round!

I agree with the Difference regarding ABB. I think he makes matches sound more exciting than some other commentators.

I listened to Denmark verses Holland on TS this afternoon. It sounded so quiet on 5 Live then I switched to TalkSport and the effects were considerably louder.

It is disappointing that instead of offering more choice on the radio by broadcasting the rugby union, 5 Live broadcast a match that was on BBC1 and TS.

glad it wasn't just me who thought the effects on the 5live commentary were very quiet!
I can see your point re the rugby but to be fair, it was never going to happen. I do think they could have at least offered an online stream (if, indeed they didn't).

Have to say I miss having two commentators, listening to Alan Green moaning for 90 minutes even with a 15 minute breaks is a bit wearing!

But he wasn't moaning for 90 minutes.
I heard the game and he hardly moaned at all.
But don't let the facts get in the way of your agenda.

Easy boy! Why is everyone on DS so touchy?

I was exaggerating for effect. You know what he's like.

to be fair to Mike I can see what he means. Green was lucky yesterday in that the game was entertaining. just wait for the first dull 0 0 for him to start ranting...

Are 5Live going to cut away from the French Open Final to do Spain vs Italy or are they going to wait for its conclusion and then go across to Poland?

I believe they should stay with the tennis until its conclusion.

i'm not listening to 5live at the moment but now its started raining their decision might be made for them. if the tennis does re-start i think they'll stick with the football. it looks as if Nadal is about to go 2 sets up and its all looking fairly routine for him unlike their australian open final epic.

Not neccessary related to Euros. Does anyone choose to listen to sport even if the TV option is available? Or to make it related to the Euros, anyone listening to games instead of watching?

Depends who is commentating on TV and Radio. Drury will get me onto radio with TV pictures as will Andy Townsend and Mark Bright.

Just can't stand the relentless shouting of the Talksport commentators, they go beyond parody if that's possible.

The schoolgirl screaming is just irritating.
