Using the recovery discs you eithier got with the computer or the ones you created when you first loaded it.

I had this happen with my First Direct account after I downloaded some dodgy software. I rang them and they confirmed that they hadn't changed their system to request such info from customers. I uninstalled the software and did a malware sweep which returned me to the normal login settings.

Before doing that, consider whether there are any data files that you want to keep (photos, music, videos, documents, spreadsheets, email messages and attachments, lists of email addresses, lists of favourite web sites, etc) - but also consider the risk that in doing that you might pass the infection on, so expert advice might well be needed.

I've posted on geeksgo but had no reply but read old threads on similar problems and ran everything including combofix. It worked but then the thing came back!!! Now we've arranged for someone to come round and fix it.

How do these things manage to get in your pc? My dad has exactly the same sceurity as me. Mcafee Firewall, Microsoft Security Essential, Malawarebyts. His computer has something on it but my laptop is fine.

I download on my laptop but he never does on hi pc. I wonder how he managed to get this.
It looks like something nasty, varied and determined. Its blocking/changing the addresses of the virus sites to stop you going there and blocking the av from working. Its probably doing something else behind that shield. When thats happened to me there's been a set of trojans in there working to hidden files and a rootkit that may just reinstall them if you manage to take them out. Ultimately there are two things to do. 1. download as many AVs as you can on another machine (superantispyware seems effective) and use them from a USB or, if you can get on line, try an online scanner like http://www.eset.com/home/products/online-scanner/ ( I think trend housecall and Panda still do one too) Problem is when I had a rootkit after using 10 different avs the tenth was still finding stuff. Another is that some of the problem may be patched into programmes you need so things may not work if an AV takes teh virus out. 2. Return the computer to factory condition if you can and hope nothing was on it that survived the process. Getting someone in may solve it if they know what they are doing. I tried a local one once and after he inserted his "repair" disk my pc had more viruses on it than before.......Someone may be able to advise how you find the really good people - word of mouth may only tell you that they can deal with simpler issues.

The question is if you ever can assume the machine now is safe even if 2 or AVs come up clean.. I wouldn't use it for banking unless someone really credible said it was now safe or you had restored it to factory condition and then thrown a lot of av scans at it.

Don't know where all these things come from,.. Some are on corrupted sites and just get in when you go to a page whether you click anything or not. Others get in if you click on boxes that pop up or emails, others just seem to get in.

The OP didn't return so we may never know what the solution was.

Sorry guys here's an update.

I did a complete fresh install whilst talking to this wonderful guy on my laptop in the US. He talked me through the whole thing all day!! It took about 7 hours and he helped me do the fresh install, talked me through adding drivers and downloading all my security and software again. Updating windows the lot.

Since then it's running like a dream and the nasties have gone for sure. The guy was on geekgo forums. He was fantastic.

I see why people say it's a last rresort doing a fresh install. It was a hell of a lot of work but well worth it in the end.
