The gorgeous drinking yoghurt is now 33% larger bottle for the same price. The strawberry one mixed with skimmed or semi skimmed milk makes a lovely milkshake.

The jars of curry sauce with a plastic cap with power inside are very good. Better than Lloyd Grossman and others.

Their tins of marrowfat peas are very good too. I always keep a couple in in case I forget to soak dried ones.

Yes I quite agree. The Lidl Smedley's mushy peas are very good.

21 day matured ribeye steaks are divine.

They have a big eye of fat and plenty of marbling.

So tasty and tender.

I tried their 'Delux' butter with salt crystals. The butter part of it was nice, but the salt content was just over the top. No surprise that I last week went in three branches of Lidl and they have loads of stock near its best before date at either 30% off or in a buy one get one free offer.

Given how much salt there is in it, I'm amazed the best before date is any time before the year 3000!

I also notice that whilst Lidl introduced the 'Delux' range with superior products, they've started slyly re-branding some existing products under the Delux brand despite it not being special before. Examples are their hand cooked crisps and coffee syrup. As a range, it's still good overall, and in most cases better than leading supermarket own brands. Some of the big supermarket premium brands are better still, but Lidl's 'Delux' ranges are often cheaper than big supermarkets normal ranges, never mind their posh premium ranges.

Maybe Lidl could have the salt content of their butter reduced to 1.5-2% (like normal salted butter) next time. Aldi's West Country butter with salt crystals isn't nearly as salty.

Agree with this - and at only 69p it's a complete bargain as well.
Makes Heinz look very expensive (which I guess it is)

I tried one of their 'Delux' joints of sirloin last week. They were going half price, so I got a 900g joint for something over £8.

It was absolutely delicious and completely melted in the mouth. Even a couple of days after cooking, it still tastes delicious and is extremely soft when you warm it up from the fridge.

I have no idea if the offer is over, but I'm off tomorrow to see if I can get another one.

At the moment, I'm also finding their cauliflowers to be the best. They taste nice but they're also big. The ones in Aldi and Asda are tiny once you cut off all the leaves they leave on to make them look big. Asda do extra large cauliflowers about the same size as a Lidl normal one, but for twice the price.

Lidl are also currently going bottles of Hardy's Stamp shiraz/cabernet sauvignon or Bin 53 Shiraz for £4.69, both of which are great for that price, especially with a sirloin roast! A couple of other supermarkets have subsequently put the Hardy's shiraz/cabernet sauvignon on offer for £5, but Lidl are still cheaper.

I also tried their white farmhouse loaf, and it's lovely. Though I only buy it if it's very soft and fresh. Some batches are a bit more dry and hard. They're 85p compared to 65p for an Aldi toaster loaf, or £1 for an 800g Warburtons loaf from Asda (which is more consistent than Lidl's farmhouse).

Their paprika flavour Pringle tube look-a-like are lovely. The flavour isn't overpowering, there's a nice crunch and they don't taste like they've been fried in month old oil. 79p or 89p I think. Definitley be trying the other varieties.

I love their BBQ rack of ribs especially when they have them on a weekend special offer at half price of £1.49. They allow you to buy up to six packs, which I did last time, a week or so ago, as the use buy date on them is 9th. June and they can be just kept in the fridge. They're so quick to do as well, just 5 minutes in the microwave and taste lovely.

They've recently put a bakery in my branch and their jam doughnuts are lovely and are only 29p.

My son loves their Cornish pasties. 3 large ones for only £1.49 I think.

I also like their big tubs of Greek yoghurt, which are good value too.

Their double cream is lovely and at least 30p cheaper than the cheapest supermarket.
The crusti croc cheese twists yum.
Tried some of their new mascarpone last week it was gorgeous and a fraction of the price compared to other shops.
My favourite thing in lidl is the large flat mushrooms. These are always fresh and 40p a pack cheaper than Morrisons.
My family love the crusti croc crisps and again they are so much cheaper than anything else.

So are the cheese rolls. The bakery is so much cheaper than other places with many of the same pastries.

Are these frozen? Seems like a long expiry date if they are just kept in the fridge.

No they are not frozen just refrigerated. The chap was just unpacking them when I got mine. Must admit I was surprised at the long expiry date. It was the date which made me buy 6 packs of them. I've eaten 3 packs already. Perhaps they last longer as they're vacuum packed.

There seem to be further cuts to some of Lidl's own-brands. The 'Cein' range of hand creams, face washes and shower gels have gone, in favour of big brands that cost twice the price. All dried egg pasta (including spaghetti) has now been removed and various other things have gone.

It seems that after Aldi and Lidl have got a lot of press attention building a reputation for being growing budget supermakets, they're quietly dropping a lot of lines that earned them that reputation in favour of higher mark-ups on big brands. I wouldn't be surprised if those brands have offered incentives to make this happen, and the supermarkets are dropping some lines now that they don't have to work so hard to impress customers.

I don't go into LIDL often but I was surprised at the amount of branded items they now sell as opposed to ALDI.

I like the Cein range. The soap is still there but in different packaging. I also like the bubble bath.

I tried their Moordale burgers that come in packs of 8 and they have an unpleasant greasy taste. They've been half price on three occasions in the last two months, and I often see a stack of them in the 30% off chiller cabinet.

The hot weather has been great for me as a customer. Loads of meat has been going for 30% off, even a few days before its best before date, presumably because sales are low as people want salads or other lighter dinners.

I tried their apple turnovers and they're very nice. I also tried their cheese-topped rolls off the back of a recommendation on here. They were OK, but not that special. I also bought a jam doughnut for a fan of them, and they said they were too doughy. I assume from that, that anyone who likes doughy bread would like them.

Their 'Royal Orchard Blackcurrant High Juice' is nice, but only the one with sugar. It's close to Ribena but not quite as nice. Certainly worth it when 2L bottles of Ribena aren't going for £3 in another supermarket. Their sugar-free version is as nasty as Aldi's.

I noticed before the shower gel disappeared from my local Lidls, it changed from being just a shower gel to a shower gel and shampoo combined. I assumed this was a sign they'd got a new supplier who uses cheaper ingredients which leave it mild enough to use on hair. It certainly didn't work as well.

They also used to do a basic shampoo and conditioner for 75p, which weren't the best but perfectly adequate. And for 75p each, you couldn't complain. I think these Cein products have also been removed in favour of other products costing more.

I think both Aldi and Lidl have earned good reputations during the recession. But now it's coming to an end, they both seem to be going down-hill, dropping everything that attracted people away from the big supermarkets in the first place.

Yes, every time I visit a Lidl I have more consternation.

Big brands are enticing them with deals,a nd to sell that false half price stuff too.(Lidls own half price offers are real)

Once quality own brands disappear there is far less incentive to visit when it starts to look like a Tesco, just smaller. Short term gain, long term disaster? Have they not learnt the lesson of failed Kwik Save?

Aldi is becoming a better attraction.
