I'm finding that the problem with Lidl is that since they revamped their stores they are just another supermarket and not particularly cheap. Give me Aldi every time.
I have no complaints about Lidl price wise . |

The bags of Ground Coffee £1.79 just now are excellent, especially the 'java sumatra' and the 'guatemalan' varieties. Very nice 👍

Has anyone tried their Delux 28-day matured beef joints? I've been meaning to try them for a while, but today I took a close look and they're brisket. They're also only 14-days proper dry-matured, and then another 14-days matured in some other way.
Are they worth the price? I'd have thought they'd not be worth it as brisket. Surely they'd have to be slow cooked, so you may as well buy a cheaper joint. Meanwhile, they're selling small pieces of "British" Châteaubriant (whatever that means!) for around £13. I haven't tried them, but they're smaller joints than previous years, feel firmer and I don't remember them explicitly being labelled "British" either (which surely means they're just "beef fillet"?). I'd be more inclined to try the sirloin joints from Aldi for less than two-thirds of the price. Mind you, if you're having a small Christmas and only need a 500g joint, you still might want to give Lidl's Châteaubriant a punt. |

4 pack of 'premium British apples' 99p are excellent.
Plenty of their Xmas stock is now reduced too, Dark chocolate & almond covered gingerbread bites 69p. Nice Large box of assorted Nuts and a Nutcracker £1.99. |

Tried their 4-pack of frozen breaded haddock for £2. The cooking instructions were a bit odd, saying to cook at gas mark 9 for 30 minutes, and the fish was rather dry at the end of it, even though it wasn't burnt.
I'll stick with Aldi's chinky battered or breaded frozen haddock for £2.50. The chilled breaded haddock is usually nice from both Lidl and Aldi, but I notice this week it's reduced to £1.29 in Lidl and it looks different. The breaded coating is significantly darker as though it's burnt, making me wonder whether they're simply selling off a bad batch cheaper. Lidl also currently have 8 almond flake coated ice creams for £2.09, which are lovely and definitely worth buying over big brands like Magnum. They do these in boxes of 8 a few times a year but the almond ones always sell out quickly in the warmer months. Thanks to the cold snap, there are plenty left this time! |

On a whim, I bought two of the LED lightbulbs (E27 size - 2 for £4). Big mistake. They are so dim that I think you'd get more light by striking a match. Probably useful if you need to leave a light on all night in children's bedrooms.

Their large apple pies for £1.69 are lovely, in the chiller cabinet, near the milk, so you can pop some cream in your basket to go with

I just tried their new frozen 'Delux' quarter pounders and whilst they taste and look better than Aldi's (although 30p more), they contained many chunks of bone that could too easily have chipped my teeth.
They're definitely from a different source than Aldi. The packaging is very different and they're sold as Irish Hereford beef steak burgers, made in Northern Ireland. The back of the packet includes a warning about bones, which I assumed was mainly legalese to cover themselves for law suits against broken teeth. But no. they really do contain lots of bone 'small pieces'. I assume they were made out of aggressively mechanically recovered meat? |

Their prawns or crayfish tails are lovely. Vinegar and white pepper on them, yum.

Upcoming special on sale from Monday 15 August
Florabest Extendable Loppers at £7.99 I can recommend these, excellent quality and performance. Good non-slip extenders. A little on the heavy side if you have a lot to do, but brilliant for our once-a-year pruning jobs and occasional use. I might get the hedge shears to go with it. |

Aldi & Lidl RSPCA Assured pig & chicken products are very good and much cheaper than Sainsburys equivalents.
Their strawberries are awful. Only £1.29 and they 'look' ok, but they're not. |

Passing a Lidl today I swerved in to get a pack of spaghetti as I was making spag Bol for me and a mate tonight.
The bolognaise was already made. Pack of spaghetti, two garlic baguettes, a cheesecake, bottle of Zinfandel, bottle of Merlot, bottle of Shiraz (one of those evenings) ......... £17 something 👍 |

Their 4 pack of deluxe fish cakes (haddock and other ones) are top quality, really excellent and taste far better than Wait-rose own fish cake (2 pack) which are about the same price.
Their own standard straight oven chips are awful. The sweetened Soya milk @ 59p is good value but very sweet - I wish they did unsweetened. I find that their fresh veg goes off extremely quickly - may be a good thing as might be because it's not stored for years in deep refrigeration? |

I noticed a few sudden price rises in Lidl today, including 'Delux' sausages up 10p and 4-pack cans of premium lager up 20p. This echoes similar price increases in Aldi a couple of weeks ago.
