Lidl - Good and bad

Cheap prices and some of the own brand goods are just as good as branded goods but the store itself gives the impression of being run down, seedy and neglected. Much prefer to have an Aldi there instead.

All of Lidl's own-brand goods give the impression of being cheap rubbish even if it's not. All their packaging looks as if it's designed by somebody who is normally responsible for the dog foods. Apart from the chocolate I hardly ever buy a Lidl own-brand in a rin, whereas I prefer most of Aldi's to any major brand.

Sorry - just remembered Lidl Luxury Fruit & Nut Muesli, which is the best on the market.

That's pretty true, and with a redesign often comes a change in the quality of the product. Used to swear by the streaky unsmoked bacon rashers, but they changed the supplier and redesigned the packaging - the net result, a watery mess of bacon with gloopy stuff in the tray.

Lidl have introduced a new 'Deluxe' pasta stir-in sauce that is disappointing. It's the same price as Aldi's 'Specially Selected' sauces (89p) but is much weaker and doesn't taste as nice. It also comes in a plastic tub you peel a foil lid off rather than Aldi's glass jars.

I tried a tub on 200g of dried egg pasta that was cooked, but there was very little flavour of the sauce. I had to top it up with ketchup, which made a waste of good egg pasta! Aldi's jars currently add plenty of flavour to 225g of dried pasta after you cook it. Before they changed the recipe, an 89p jar very comfortably covered 275g of pasta.

Lidl also have seasonal tagliatelle, including one made from 25% egg pasta. It tastes nice, but has more of an egg taste than Aldi's equivalents, even the old ones that used to be made from over 30% egg. It was priced £1.49 on the shelf but I was charged 99p at the till!

One of my local Lidls has recently added self-service tills and they're a pain in the arse. They're slow and clunky, and are a real hassle when you have an item with a 30% off sticker because you need to call an assistant over for each one. Because Lidl run with a skeleton staff, this can take longer than bigger supermarkets, and the staff can get openly annoyed with you and the frustration of the machines being clunky. Neither are my fault but this makes me feel uncomfortable.

There are also problems with buying alcohol. Unlike every other supermarket, the till stops working when you pass the first alcoholic item over the scanner and you need an assistant to come over, rather than at the end after you've scanned all items (including the 30% off items). I have also repeatedly had the problem of the assistant marking me as being over 25 and the till continues working, only to stop again when I scan another alcoholic item. The assistant has to come over again, despite them telling me I should only be stopped once for alcohol. But this is often not the case in my experience. Clearly the software has bugs.

I have even had problems with the till taking ages to recognise all coins. Tonight I put in the right money all in one go into the machine and the cogs ticked away processing them. It stopped and claimed I owed another pound, which I didn't. After about 15 seconds an assistant came over (for the fourth time in one transaction) to see what the latest problem was and said I needed to put in another £1. I said I didn't and we 'argued' this for about another 15 seconds until suddenly the till said the bill (all on its own) was fully paid and printed a receipt. It made no noises of any kind when it did this. It appeared to be just sitting there for 30 seconds waiting for a pound before realising it didn't need one after all.

They've also replaced all the normal tills, baskets and staff uniforms. So that'll probably be another 10p on loads more items to pay for it all.
