Hmm

Bad - 6 large free range eggs

2 out of 6 eggs were bad. In fact 1 of them was proper putrid. Nearly heaved!

Shame, they've been fine until now. Maybe just a bad batch/box?

Lidl Gelatelli lime & raspberry ice cream.

Bad.

Good:
The 300g tortilla bags for less than a £1
The £3.49 (14vol) Chardonnay (Bought a box)
Seed mixes

Actually, rarely had anything bad. Instant coffee was drinkable, frozen pizzas edible. Mainly buy salad stuff and that's always ok (though if Tescos are doing one of their usual 2for1s, not necessarily as cheap).

Lidl Bakery Tiger Bread - Better than any other I've had.

It's smaller in size, but same weight as Asda/Morrisons and all the better for it. Much denser and tastier, I swear Asda must pump air into theirs to make it so dry and flaky.

Very subjective, but after tasting it a few times now, I'm finding the McEnnedy peanut butter a bit on the sickly side. Think I prefer the Tesco crunchy jobby. Not only that, but when I opened it this morning, there was a pool of oil on top. Put me right off.

I went into our Lidls on Wednesday, I have not been there for years, but i needed some spuds and it was on the way back from the hospital.

i noticed it got a bakery, ok, a couple of ovens that they stick part baked bread in. The shop is still crap mind you, I did not think much of it when they first opened and it is not better now. Still a mess.

Good: The li'l brunnete that just started on the tills.

Bad: My favourite geek chic girly in there is married

Is lidl ethically okay? Ie is the meat well cared for, ate suppliers paid fairly? Is the food any higher in salt/sugar/fat than other places? Does the food have more chemicals?

Would like to try it but I do avoid the asda, morrisons, Sainsbury, Tesco big 4 where possible for these reasons

Lidl's frozen squids for £3.49. Bargain.

Cooked in boiling salted water for a minute or two and eaten cold with a sprinkle of salt if need and malt vinegar.

GOOD
Premium coleslaw
Premium chocolate in the cardboard wrapper
Dark rum - Good for the price
W5 washing up liquid
Black grape juice
Bananas
Peppers
Premium sliced, cured ham (not made from reformed meat)
Free range eggs
Hair gel
Premium frozen salmon (the box with 2 slices for £3)
Dried herbs
Fresh herbs
Kale
Mushrooms
Baby plum tomatoes
Egg pasta/lasagne/spaghetti
Onions
Premium ice cream
Beef burgers (the box with four large ones rather than 8 small ones)
Large frozen fries
Yoghurt

BAD
Gin - tastes like a marker pen
Bread - Tastes like sawdust
Potatoes - Too many black spots inside them and somttimes have a funny taste.
Frozen pizzas - Cardboardy
Wine - Some are OK but many taste sour
Frozen Pollock - Dry, rubbery and virtually flavourless.
Tomato sauce - Too tangy and artificial
Sausage rolls - Pastry like cardboard and meat like it was 90% fat and gristle
Salad - Just tastes funny. Much prefer bags from Asda, Morrisons, etc.

Their muffins used to be lovely, but they changed suppliers a couple of times in the last year and now they're very bland. Their shower gel is weak compared to leading brands, but is a third of the price. I tend to buy a better brand rather than just use more of the cheap stuff. Celery is also very average in taste and crispness. And their white rum is a cheap copy of Bacardi. Not bad for the price, but not as nice as their dark rum.”

Sounds like Supermarkets in general..

A couple of weekends ago, they were doing their "Melangerie First Class" coffee half price so I tried it. It's hardly a favourite, but certainly drinkable throughout the day. I tried their other premium ground coffee last year (comes as a gold vacuum-packed brick) and I don't think there's much difference in either.

£2.24 for 500g of coffee was a great bargain. Makes the big brands on the supermarket shelves look rather greedy to charge £3.50 for 227g.

I was wondering if Lidl sold alcohol, this has answered my question.

Bad - 1.5 litre carton Solevita Orange Drink. Sure it's cheap but if u can imagine pure orange juice diluted with water, u get the idea. Having checked the ingredients on the side of the box, that's exactly what it is!

No, stick with the Vitafit pure squeezed orange juice which is delicious.

Big tubs of plain greek yoghourt are better than anywhere else. Totally delicious. Their tubs of potato salad are ideal for people living on their own - I get them for my Mum.

Sometimes they do a frozen side of salmon with a herby coating and they're about £5 I think. Cook one of those and do jacket spuds and a big salad. Serves 4.

Their Xmas cakes and Xmas puds always score high in the ratings. My son loves their Stollen too.

I've ended up tending to stick to Aldi for alcohol. Their wine is definitely nicer, and their white rum is very slightly nicer. I've never tried their dark rum, but like most supermarket own brands, it's 37.5% rather than 40% (as Lidl's is). I always wonder whether that's a sign that it's the same stuff they make the white rum out of but with colouring and flavourings added.

Aldi's gin is drinkable while Lidl's is most certainly not.

I've never tried "Austins", which is Aldi's equivalent of Pimms, but I did try Lidl's "Jeeves", which is very cheap (£6 for 1L) and seems to taste the same as Pimms to me. Though I'm not really into those kinds of drinks.

I have had some great wines from LIDL, at least in their mid price ones.

You can only judge year by year though as contracts and such like means stores vary.
The quite awful stuff always seemed to be Asda's 'half the £10 price' £5 wine.

They're currently building an Aldi across the road from me, the nearest Lidl is a 15 minute bus journey away. I'm not a big drinker, I do like Pimms, had a bad experience with gin on a plane so don't touch it, I do not like lager or wine (unless it's desert wine), favourite drink is Baileys.

Bought a jar of pesto in there, which I've mostly used as a spread in various sandwiches. Very nice, and I'll be buying that again.

Well I got suckered in on a 'taste test' claiming the flat stonebaked 4 cheese frozen pizzas tasted better than the main brand.

They are as nice as they used to be but I quite prefer their mozzarella and their vegetarian ones.

Sainsbury do a version of Tiger bread they call Giraffe bread and it is gorgeous. Started me eating white bread again.

BAD - the roasted and SALTED pistachios.

The salt on these is incomprehensible. Seriously. A stroke in a bag.

Pretty sure I had the plain roasted ones last time and they were fine.

I need water.
