While Iron Maiden is undoubtedly a heavy metal institution, mainstream recognition is not something that they are often afforded. A recent poll conducted by music retailer HMV, however, is set to change all that.

In a poll to mark the Queen of England's diamond jubilee, the store has been asking its customers to vote for their favorite British album of the past 60 years.

Winning 9.2% of the 30,000 votes cast, Maiden's landmark 1982 album Number Of The Beast went on to trump such heavyweight acts as Oasis, Pink Floyd and The Beatles.

The full top ten list is as follows, along with percentage of votes, is as follows:

01. Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast (9.18%)
02. Depeche Mode - Violator (6.30%)
03. The Beatles - Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (5.69)
04. The Beatles - Abbey Road (5.67%)
05. Pink Floyd - The Dark Side Of The Moon (5.23%)
06. The Beatles - Revolver (4.01%)
07. Queen - A Night At The Opera (3.98%)
08. Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (3.91%)
09. Adele - 21 (3.07%)
10. The Beatles - White Album (2.60%)

Blabbermouth has published the following statement from HMV's Gennaro Castaldo:

"You often tend to see the same artists and albums dominate album polls, but with social media increasingly giving the most ardent and passionate fans a powerful voice, I think that's all going to change, and so it's no surprise that Iron Maiden have come out on top as their fans are renowned for being the most loyal and dedicated around. Congratulations to Iron Maiden — we now know the number of the beast is, in fact, …1."
UP THE IRONS!

They never get enough credit in this country despite their worldwide and sustained success.

Cool. I love Iron Maiden and they put on the 2nd best concert I have ever been to. It's great to see them get some recognition.

No doubt if Adele was No. 1 this thread would be at 5 pages already - 2 replies says it all about how little people know about real bands like Maiden who have worked hard for years and achieved success without the help of the media.

"Number of the Beast" is my penultimate Iron Maiden track. I'm not a huge fan, but love that particular song.

Depeche Mode at number 2. I'm more than happy with that result.

It's more than overdue, as a long time Mode and for that matter not for off equally as long Maiden fan, I don't mind coming second to the mighty Maiden!

Depeche Mode at number 2 on that chart is also very impressive indeed.

Yes indeed. Although as we know they should be at Number 1

Ah, but remember, Iron Maiden aren't really popular, they only win public polls like this because they have loads of fans.

(Said to me with a straight face by someone after Maiden won that Brit award a few years back).

Haha brilliant

Maiden really are a phenomenom - over 80 million albums sold, their last album going to No. 1 in nearly 30 countries worldwide, and yet the media like to pretend they don't even exist. And when they do, it's some sarky and inaccurate review.

I would have laughed at the person who said that, then smacked some sense into them, then laughed some more.

Nothing against Iron Maiden for the head of the poll, but isn`t their first album vastly superior to "number of the beast"?

It's a different "beast" altogether. I've found that most of the people that rate the first album as the best tend not to like the Dickinson stuff at all.

Sorry for the oft-repeated clichés but the first album was raw, edgy, streetwise and (sorry Steve) punkish. Anyone who is only familiar with stuff like Run to the Hills or 2 Minutes to Midnight probably wouldn't even recognise it as Maiden.

I know punks and indie kids who despise everything to do with Metal but they like the first two Maiden albums. NOTB was a huge step for Maiden, most people say forward, some insist it was backwards.

Very surprised, while it's always one of the few metal albums the mainstream music press are willing to acknowledge, it certainly isn't something you usually see topping a poll like this.

Personally, I don't think it's one of Maiden's better albums and there are several other albums in the top 10 alone that I would place above it. Even so, nice to see someone other than the usual suspects at the top of the list, and obviously Iron Maiden are always deserving of credit and attention.

I like Dickinson, I like him really a lot but for me he is more a technical singer, I bet if he choose a classical career he would be a great tenor.

Last week I heard "made in Japan" and there is so much more life in Gillan`s voice and I heard that in Di’Anno`s voice, too.

I must be one of the few that like both the 1st album and Number - I saw Maiden on their 1982 tour Beast on the Road when it came out.

I'm not sure how Iron Maiden finished top of this list.

Perhaps MetalHeads have learned how to use computers?
