Karen Rose's Die For Me. I'm enjoying it and looking forward to working my way through a few more of her books. It's intriguing and entertaining.

Re-visiting an old Ed McBain book, unusual for me as I very rarely re-read books. This one is called Killer's Wedge.

John Gribben's Stardust - the cosmic recycling of stars, planets and people which describes how the different elements that are now used by living organisms were once generated by nuclear synthesis within primordial stars and by large stars blowing up at the end of their lives. Despite the subject, it's actually quite readable.

Working my way through some of the Hamish Macbeth books by MC Beaton really enjoying them.
I've recently bought the first 4 in the series, just got to trawl to the end of 11.22.63 by Stephen King first - only another 500 or so pages to go!

The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
Massive tome to get through, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
What I loved about it, was the characters which really sprang out from the pages
Theo, the narrator of the story, seemed rather weak, but I loved his chum Boris, gentle antique restorer, Hobie, and Theo's childhood friend, Andy. Plus there was a whole host of sharply drawn characters that came to life.
I wasn't really interested in antiques/art, of which I did skim along. but it was a thrilling, sad, harrowing but uplifting read.

Just embarking on Lonesome Dove and enjoying so far. Never seen the mini series, but having a quick look at the cast list on imdb I will catch it next time, as the casting is pretty much spot on my ideas for the characters I've met so far, especially the two main leads.

Currently tackling Will Self's Umbrella. Not halfway into it yet, but thoroughly enjoying it. No chapters, just one long stream of consciousness narrative, sometimes difficult to tell when he's switched from one character to another, but worth the effort. Certainly glad of the dictionary function on my Kindle, hardly ever needed to use it before but must have used it five or six times already on this book!

After several false starts with other books, I'm reading 'Never let me go' by Kazuo Ishiguro as I watched the film the other day.

I don't know why but I always assumed it was just a love story along similar line to 'The Remains of the Day' but of course it's not. I do like his writing style.

Just book (99p Kindle Daily Deal) The King in the North: The Life and Times of Oswald of Northumbria by Max Adams

Oswald Whiteblade lived one of the most influential and colourful lives in early English history. Before his death in battle against the pagans of Mercia cut short his reign as king of Northumbria (634-42), he remodelled his northeastern English homeland as a Christian kingdom, founded the monastery of Lindisfarne, introduced a culture of learning which influenced all Europe, and became the most powerful ruler in Britain.

Max Adams's thrilling account rescues Oswald from Dark Age obscurity to reveal an unjustly forgotten English hero - a king whose return from exile to reclaim his birthright was the inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien's Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings. But THE KING IN THE NORTH is more than just a biography of the first great English monarch; it is a stunningly researched, wide-ranging, beautifully written and revelatory portrait of early medieval England in all its aspects.

I loved this book. I know what you mean about the writing style. I was lucky enough to read the book before watching the film and the twist took me aback (in a good way).

Started reading The Princess Bride yesterday. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting but I think I'm enjoying it. I'll have to review after I've finished to see if I really am enjoying it!
