Working my way through some Willbur Smith novels - just about to finish A Sparrow Falls and then moving onto Birds of Prey - with Monsoon, Blue Horizon and The Triumph of the Sun to follow - by which time hopefully the next Clive Cussler Oregon Files book will be out. (Mirage).

The Martian by Andy Weir. Great SF novel about an astronaut who is stranded on Mars and fight to stay alive. A great read even if you aren't a science fiction fan there are no monsters or aliens - just hard science and a story about survival in a hostile environment.

The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. The audiobook version with several readers. I'm only a couple of hours into a book lasting 24 hours. It's already quite strange.

Just starting The Memory Box by Eva Lasko Natiello, recommended in a thread on here - sounds like a really interesting premise for a book so looking forward to getting stuck into this

Elvis and Ginger - Ginger Alden
Who is of course....the woman who was Elvis Presley's girlfriend/fiance during the final part of his life. The book is probably ghost written......? But not too much as it reads like a young woman's diary with lots of intimate detail. Such as the many moods and tantrums of Elvis who lived pretty much in his bedroom and in his pajamas - says Ginger. It seems he had a childish temper.....At one point he wakes up and asks Ginger for "more yoghurt". She sleepily points out that he has just eaten 20 pots of Yoghurt which is more than enough. A few minutes later she is woken by the sound of Elvis shooting a hole through the headboard of the bed....Just above Gingers head. Elvis says: "Ok. Now have I got your attention? " But she talks about his affection (and astonishing generosity) towards her whole family and is very forgiving of Elvis. |

I started reading "Great Democrats" by Alfred Barratt Brown. This reprint
of a 1934 essay collection celebrates thinkers who championed democratic values. It contains short essays on Thomas Paine, John Stuart Mill, P. B. Shelley, Abraham Lincoln etc.. The essays are by some notable contributors (Bertrand Russell, Norman Thomas, Henry W. Nevinson and his wife Evelyn Sharp , and H. N. Brailsford). Published in the height of "the Age of the Dictators", "Great Democrats" was intended as a riposte to those who thought Hitler and Mussolini (or Stalin) were the way of the future. I'm surprised this excellent collection isn't better known. |

Just approaching the last few chapters of I am pilgrim. What a total load of utter tosh the ending is. Spoilt the whole book. It seems the author just ran out of ideas and came up with the most lame idea he could come up with. Cant believe I have wasted my time reading the preceding 600 odd pages for the crap at the end.
