I hope so, I asked for High Rise but got this. I've enjoyed his other work.

I'm listening to The Oversight by Charlie Fletcher, narrated by Simon Prebble, currently about halfway through. A fantasy novel set in Victorian London, it's the first in a trilogy with the second book due in June.

The Oversight are a group of five people with various abilities, whose job is to ensure that humans and supernaturals living in London co-exist without the humans being aware of, or affected by, the supernaturals.

The book has excellent reviews and has been described as Dickensian, likened to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and compared to Neil Gaiman. So far I'd agree, the writing is very good and has the feel Bleak House or Oliver Twist. Hopefully the story will live up to the hype.

This sounds exactly what I want to read next. Thanks for the synopsis.

I've heard really good things about that. You've reminded me to add it to my list too.

I've just finished 'This is How' by M J Hyland. It's the (fictional) story (told in the first person) of how a young man ends up in prison doing a life sentence for murder, and his experience of remand, the trial, and then prison. It's not the most page-turnerish book I've ever read but I liked it because it's a bit different. It doesn't fit neatly into any genre, and I like that quality in a book. The second half was better than the first.

I've just started 'Time to Die' by Alex Howard, a crime writer who is new to me. Too early to say if I like it yet though.

I'm glad The Oversight seems to have some fans; it deserves it.

The second volume, The Paradox, is coming out in May, I believe - I'm looking forward to it. I just hope we don't have to wait years for the third volume, á la Kingkiller!

I've been trying to get through Atlas Shrugged for quite a while. I know everyone tends to hate on it, but at the moment I'm not entirely sure why. Despite not agreeing with some of the sentiments expressed, I think it's at the very least a really engaging story! Which I would consider a feat considering how bloody long the thing is. But hey, I'm only about 60% in so maybe I'm not at the most offensive bits yet.

Other than that I just read The Martian by Andy Weir - now that was good!

I'm not sure offensive is the right word but it certainly doesn't stand up to scrutiny as any form of political manifesto. As a read, i rather enjoyed the first two thirds as well. I won't elaborate on the final part and let you draw your own conclusions but I found a certain section incredibly turgid.

Book 9 of 28 in the Horus Heresy called "Mechanicum". I think I'll give it 2 novels in the series then give that series a rest for a while. As I get the plot.
