Flappers by Judith Mackrell
Quote:
“Glamorized, mythologized and demonized - the women of the 1920s prefigured the 1960s in their determination to reinvent the way they lived. Flappers is in part a biography of that restless generation: starting with its first fashionable acts of rebellion just before the Great War, and continuing through to the end of the decade when the Wall Street crash signal led another cataclysmic world change.

It focuses on six women who between them exemplified the range and daring of that generation’s spirit. Diana Cooper, Nancy Cunard, Tallulah Bankhead, Zelda Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker and Tamara de Lempicka were far from typical flappers. Although they danced the Charleston, wore fashionable clothes and partied with the rest of their peers, they made themselves prominent among the artists, icons, and heroines of their age.”

I'm loving Dead Simple so far and am almost finished. I found it on both Kindle and ibooks for 99 cent

The other books go up a bit about 2.50 - 5.99 i think but its definitely fun to read them. Dead simple is great in that each chapter is quite short and shows the story from many points of view so it keeps me interested. Some of the reviews said there are LOTS of twists and while it is keeping me interestered it doesn't have as many as i'd imagined (so far) but i reckon the end will be shocking - def worth a shot at this price though

Has anyone read the Outlanders series by Diana Gabaldon and is it worth investing in ?

I've recently read 'Bleak House' by Charles Dickens; and 'The Stranger' by Albert Camus.

I'm now reading 'The King's Grave: The Search for Richard III' by Philippa Langley and Michael Jones; and 'Madame Bovary' by Gustave Flaubert.

I read the first 3 or 4 but then got bored of the series - they are VERY long! The first in the series is the best imho. They are very popular and have almost cult status! You do need to read them in order.

I'm on my last trip to The Culture!
Currently reading The Hydrogen Sonata, the last of Iain M Banks Culture novels, I've worked my way through all of them over the last year or so and I've really enjoyed every single one of them with Excession probably being my favourite although Surface Detail was great too.
Now I need to try and replace the irreplaceable

I gave up on Brighton Rock - I just wasn't enjoying it and life is too short to plough on just for the sake of it. Also, it was an audio version read by Samuel West, who is a decent actor but not such a great audiobook reader. He reads in a repetitive, rhythmical way, as if he's reciting poetry. It doesn't really work for prose.

I've just finished The Fire Witness by Lars Keplar (very consistent with his other books - basically like a description of a crime thriller movie.) Audio version read by Saul Reichlin, who always does a good job.

I'm just starting Behind Closed Doors by Susan Lewis (audio version, read by Clare Corbett). A teenage girl has gone missing and a female cop (whose own child disappeared some time before) is investigating. I haven't got far enough yet to tell if it's a winner, but both book and reader seem fine so far.

Just started Elantris by Brandon Sanderson.
I really enjoyed the Mistborn series, so I'm hoping that this'll be just as good.

Wayward Pines, Blake Crouch
Someone Else's Wedding, Tamar Cohen
The Sudden departure of the Frasers, Louise Candlish

Yes I flit between the three but Wayward Pines is on audio so it probably doesn't count

Ruth Galloways series by Ellie Griffiths. It's like a very pared down version of "Bones" set in Norfolk.

I've just started Us by David Nicholls. I know this author is very popular so I don't know how I've managed to evade him and I probably wouldn't have chosen this book if I wasn't reading it for the book club I've joined. So far I'm loving it though - enough to immediately buy his other book One Day.

A Man Called Ove - Fredrik Backman
Story of a a lonely grieving widower, who keeps trying to follow his wife to the grave, but events, involving his neighbours keep interrupting his plans. Very funny, sad and joyous and first rate. Highly recommended

'The Understudy' and 'Starter For Ten' are also good - I enjoyed both of those too.

(We definitely have similar taste, d0lphin! )
