Not sure. I'm a Pratchett fan and I gave up on this too, and I don't really know why. It just seemed dull.

I'm listening to The Devil in the Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson, read by Joseph Kloska. It's set in 1727 when Tom Hawkins is committed to a debtors' prison for non payment of his rent. Life in the Marshalsea could be quite comfortable if the prisoner had access to funds and utterly hellish if not. A view of the seamier side of London life, quite good so far.

I'm reading The Prayer of the Night Shepherd by Phil Rickman (Merrily Watkins #6). The theme this time is Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles. I'm looking forward to watching Midwinter of the Spirit on the TV later. I think that Anna Maxwell-Martin is a good choice for Merrily and David Threlfall looks how I imagine Huw Owen to be.

Regarding The Long Earth discussion above, I read it fairly recently too and was a bit underwhelmed. I'm a TP fan, so blamed Stephen Baxter. Perhaps it's just that the sum of the two is less than the separate parts. I'm planning to read the next book in the series at some stage.

I loved the Devil in Marshalsea-- one of the best books I've read this year. Just read the sequel which is even better.

Change of mind, I'm reading God of Vengeance by the same author.

A prequel to the Viking series

Just finished 'An Officer and a Spy' by Robert Harris:
Based on the famous true story in late 19th century France of the Dreyfuss affair. Where a Jewish officer is accused of spying for the Germans and sent to Devil's Island - Brilliant book

Now reading 'The Ice Twins' by S K Tremayne. The author really draws you in with this suspenseful tale, but it's quite bleak (purposefully) but quite powerful writing in a very understated build up way.

Danny Baker 'Going To Sea In A Sieve'. Also have the follow
up book for after. I watch the not to good TV series 'Cradle
to the Grave' which is loosely based on this, so thought I
would give it a go. Liking it so far!

I've ditched it and returned it to the library. Piss poor in my opinion.

'Travelling to Infinity' by Jane Hawking (ex wife of Stephen Hawking). Audio version read by Sandra Duncan.

I'm really enjoying it so far. I'm finding it interesting to hear about the great man's life from her perspective. Bit too much detail about both of their areas of academic expertise for my taste (I'm more interested in the life/family stories) but that's par for the course I think with this kind of book.

Entertaining enough thriller, but not up to its reputation. A bit too drawn out”

I'm about halfway through, and really enjoying it. I think it would make a good movie or tv series, too.
