Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy. I started it a few years ago and thought it was just grimy, but gave it another go while I was in hospital. There is little in the way of a plot, just an exercise in seeing how much gratuitous sadism, obscene cruelty, violence and abject misery can be packed into every page. It seems to have gained notoriety because of this and is even described as a masterpiece in some quarters, although it is very badly written.
If you're determined to read the most sickening book ever written it will probably fulfil your needs. |

I'm reading Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner. This won the Booker Prize in 1984. A romantic novelist has embarrassed her friends and they have banished her to a sedate hotel in Switzerland.
I'm about to start listening to The Faithful Couple by A D Miller narrated by Patrick Tolan. The story of a friendship over decades and the ramifications of a camping trip to Yosemite. This has very mixed reviews on Amazon so I'm not expecting it to be great. |

Do you get a sense that it's the same author as Harry Potter?
I have read all of the Robert Galbraith books along with The Casual Vacancy and I have enjoyed them all. I still wouldn't pick up a Harry Potter book |
