The Eyre Affair Jasper Fforde. Very quirky and original. One of those series I kept meaning to read because everyone told me the Thursday Next series shouldnt be missed but only just getting around to it.

I have absolutely loved that series. I'm just waiting for the seventh one to arrive any day now "The Woman Who Died A Lot".

Rabbit-proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara - only 69 pages long, the shortest book I have read since primary school, will have it finished today

Currently reading "Fifty shades freed" by E L James. I will be sorry to see this trilogy end, as it's been surprisingly good.

Am getting through books so much quicker since getting the kindle last month. Or maybe it's just coincidence that I'm going through a phase of reading some really good books. I had picked a few disappointing stinkers earlier in the year that almost put my daily reading on hold!

Finished Seve: Flawed Genius by Robert Green. First golf biog I've read. Intersting insight into the behind-the-scenes politics and rivalries. Green could have done with a lightness of touch such as used by Seve on greens all around the world.

Just finished Messiah by Gore Vidal. Interesting satire about how a fictional modern death cult manages to exploit the emptiness and fears of the people and suddenly rise to dominate the western world, in much the same vein as Christianity rose in the Roman Empire from an obscure messianic death cult to an organised religion that finally took control to dominate much of the world. Some interesting parallels are drawn by this satire. Good companion piece to Vidal's Julian, which deals with the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire and the attempts by Emperor Julian to restore paganism.

Also reading the Iliad by Homer, and now starting the fifth book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Mostly Harmless).

I'm reading The Shaman In Stilettos by Anna Hunt, which is about a journalist who travelled to Peru, met a shaman who she fell in love with and became his apprentice. I'm about a quarter of the way through and I'm enjoying it a lot. Anna's writing is very good.

Red, The Waterstones Anthology. A collection of specially written stories, poems and essays loosely centred upon 2012. It's really interesting - not something I'd usually pick up but I've really enjoyed what I've read of it so far.

I am now bogged down in an essay by Will Self though...

Call The Midwife - Jennifer Worth.
I haven't watched it on TV as it really didn't appeal to me but a friend has given me her copy of the book to read and I've decided to give it a go - and so far, I'm hooked!

I watched the version of Ian Rankin's 'Doors Open' a few days back. Have read all the Rebus novels and could not believe this bland tripe was by the same author.
So I got the book and read it. Wow! Once again we ask, why do companies find a good story, buy the rights to it, find actors to fit the roles (for the most part,in this case!) then throw away the story they liked, and substitute something altogether weedier?
Great book, piss poor adaptation! It was typical bland, made for Christmas type fare, and I only hope Rankin got a decent pay packet for allowing this tripe to be made in the first place!
