The first "grown up" book I ever read was The Legend of The Seventh Virgin by Victoria Holt. I have her whole collection now in old paperbacks and re-read them quite a lot.

She did write as Jean Plaidy as well but for some reason I never tried any of those.

Love the Victoria Holt ones though.
I just had a look to see if Victoria Holt's novels were available on Kindle, but sadly not....there are a few Jean Plaidy's though, so I'm off to browse those, now!

Meantime, as I plough through the stuff I've already downloaded, I've started reading Raven Black by Ann Cleeve!

Alone in Berlin - Hans Fallada.

An extremely well written book - enjoying it at the moment. (not sure if enjoying is the right word to use here. It's brilliant.)

Reading - Life Of Pi at the moment. It took some getting into as I thought the start was very slow, but now I can't put it down! Got it for a bargain 20p for the Kindle!

Think I will try and watch the film now to see how closely it follows the book.
I've just started it today. Thanks for mentioning that it took some getting into - I know to stick with it even if the first part isn't great.

I used to pinch my Mum's Jean Plaidy books and really enjoyed them!
Also Victoria Holt's Historical suspenses - I think it's the same author under a different pen name?
You've made me feel like rereading a couple of Jean Plaidy's at some point - I remember them being real page turners
I used to love Jean Plaidy and Victoria Holt as a child. And Susan Howatch and Anya Seton.

The Unconsoled is a very strange book. At the time it really baffled me and left me very underwhelmed but its one of those books that seemed to resonate more long after I finished reading it.

I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts.

I tend to find that with a lot of Ishiguro's work in general, in that it gets you thinking after you've put the book down, as if he's inserted some mind worm into your brain that just won't stop needling. I'm yet to be underwhelmed by his work as such; even his When We Were Orphans I found interesting enough despite what the critics were saying. He sure likes to play around with the mind of the characters and twist situations, leading us up some garden paths and beyond, so I'm sort of used to that sort of thing with him. Then again, maybe this will prove to be the exception and that mind worm will sleep.

Finished "after the fall". Was really good, but "Before the fall" might have been a better title as that was most of it

Still on "Close to the Bone" stuart mcbride on the kindle and my print book is "The Creeper" Tania Carver. Not sure I'm going to like this one. I do like a good serial killer thriller but they have to be well written and involving early. Jury's still out.

Just finished 'Small Island' by Andrea Levy. It is well written, but I found it rather depressing reading about the horrors of racism during the war. There were a few light moments. I am glad that I read it, for towards the end, it was rather an uplifting finish.
