I used to keep fish as a kid, IIRC it's not the number of fish but size of the fish. There's some kind of formula, something like every 1 inch of fish needs x (you will have to research what x is equal to) amount of square inches in surface area of the tank
The depth of the tank doesn't come into play, just the width x length in square inches

As big as you've got space for and can afford but they really should be outside in a pond. They grow big fast and are messy fish. Why not get some tropicals instead? Just as easy to keep, despite people thinking they're not, and you can have lots then. In bowls or tanks goldfish never reach the size they can in ponds which is sad really as they can get to be a foot long or more.

Goldfish can grow, you know. Don't think Jaws, quite, but think those nice big fillets you see laid out on ice in Morrisons.”
Best advice in this thread. Those tiny goldfish you see in bowls and tanks are either young or stunted.

None. Too small. Either make a pond or get a heater and filter too and some small tropical fish. You need a filter anyway for goldfish!
