Can anyone tell me what size fish tank would be required to house 4 goldfish please?

I'm guessing it's the size that could house 4 goldfish, really.

Don't be mean. Dig them a pond.

Screw the tank, just put them in a plastic take away container.

..it might be wise to empty the food and add some water, though.

Or eat them.

Too far?

I used to keep fish as a kid, IIRC it's not the number of fish but size of the fish. There's some kind of formula, something like every 1 inch of fish needs x (you will have to research what x is equal to) amount of square inches in surface area of the tank

The depth of the tank doesn't come into play, just the width x length in square inches

You might be better putting this question in the Pets section.

I like that joke of radio 2 at the moment:
I went to the pet shop to buy an goldfish

the man said "do you want an aquarium?"

I said, "I don't mind what star sign it is"

Something this size should suffice

Minimum of 10 gallons per fish. And put them into a cycled tank. (Google that if you're unsure).

Don't put the tank in direct sunlight like I did either. You'll have a fresh fish soup by the end of the week.

Your question would be better phrased as, "I can afford/have room for a *size* tank, how many inches of fish can I put in it?"

Goldfish can grow, you know. Don't think Jaws, quite, but think those nice big fillets you see laid out on ice in Morrisons.

As big as you've got space for and can afford but they really should be outside in a pond. They grow big fast and are messy fish. Why not get some tropicals instead? Just as easy to keep, despite people thinking they're not, and you can have lots then. In bowls or tanks goldfish never reach the size they can in ponds which is sad really as they can get to be a foot long or more.

Best advice in this thread. Those tiny goldfish you see in bowls and tanks are either young or stunted.

Exactly. A pond is the best home for goldfish.

If google is correct and that's around 10 gallons, one small fish.

This isn't a bad link that explains it in basic terms and to the point.

None. You need approximately 115 litres minimum for just one goldfish. A 48 litre tank is completely unsuitable.

A tank that small would be better suited to tropical fish like tetras and danios.

None. Too small. Either make a pond or get a heater and filter too and some small tropical fish. You need a filter anyway for goldfish!
