This sounds a great deal better than I thought.
And I was a fan of the John Foxx incarnation!

Just listened to the album for the first time in full (it's available on Spotify).

Well it's definitely Ultravox. The album almost sent shivers down my spine. You wouldn't think it's 26 years since U-Vox - this record sounds as if it could have been a long lost follow-up from, say, 1988, a record which would have been hailed as a real return to form after the disappointment of the previous album.

There are some really great tracks on here but I have to say there are also a few, namely the slower ones, which lack a bit of muscle and bite. Ultravox were often criticised in their heyday for being bombastic and overblown but that's what I loved about them. Like more recent bands like Muse they were never afraid to throw in the kitchen sink when creating their best songs. On Brilliant that full-to-the-brim sound is lacking in places, leaving one or two tracks more reminiscent of Ure's Gift rather than, say, Lament or Rage In Eden. Only on the wonderful Satellite do we finally get the full force of Billy Currie's violin, for example.

Still, it's a very welcome record from one of my all-time favourite bands and it still knocks the socks off of most of the synth pop revival bands of the last decade or so.

Some great work by Billy Currie. The songs are a bit sluggish and Midge too quiet for a lot of the time. I love those anthemic choruses from the golden years and there's not enough of that here.

It's not perfect but few albums are. Some immediately strong tracks, and others are proving to be growers. Got my tour tickets and looking forward to hearing some of these live.

As a (I thought) die-hard Ultravox fan I can't believe the first I heard of this was an advert on Facebook this morning. So bought the album immediately and have barely stopped playing it. Best tracks: Brilliant, Satellite and Live. Most of the tracks, apart from Brilliant and Satellite, sound more Midge solo rather than Ultravox, but great to have them back in my playlist.

The more I listen the more I like it. There's just a couple of tracks that I can't feel much love for, but 12 tracks is a lot, so they could be regarded as bonus B-sides.

Really enjoying this. Very Rage in Eden. But that's good.

Rage in Eden and Vienna are amazing albums.
Loving hearing their synth sounds again.

Oh, for another Astradyne ....

Too right you are! Rage was actually the first album I ever bought and that was only because I liked the artwork and became a fan immediately, my folks will openly confess that I played at least once a day for along time! Vienna is a great album too, Astradyne is amazing... You don't hear great instrumental pieces these days, though Billy Currie has done some amazing solo albums 'refine' bieng among them

The first ever track I heard live... it was my first gig. Camden Palace. I had no idea who Ultravox were, went with my girlfriend... went out the following day bought everything I could find.
I love the John Foxx stuff but I also love the Ure years. I bought every albulm except U-Vox which I thought was pants, although I did see it on tour. Every post Foxx album/ single I have is signed by the entire band
I also went to the rock Garden in convent garden with Midge Ure and Billy Currie ( plus a shedload of other hangers on ) We all saw Georgie Fame and the Blue flames... One of the band retinue knew georgie so he came and sat with us all, I was about 18 I think... man what a night that was

They play in Manchester in September. Tickets not on sale yet, according to the Palace theatre website, but I must get one.

I was nine when they released the album Vienna.
The year before, Gary Numan released The Pleasure Principle, which featured Billy Currie.
That was the first album that I can remember asking for.
Cheers dad!! and I still have it. A bit of late teen / early twenties smoking has messed up the cover though. Lesson learned there .. don't skin up on your albums.

Thirty odd years on and Vienna is still probably my favourite album. No rose tinted glasses. Not nostalgic.
Astradyne, New Europeans, Western Promise, Mr X .. they're awesome songs. You don't hear this sort of big fat analogue synth sound today.

Never seen them live, though. They were done and dusted while I was in my mid teens. As soon as I heard U-Vox it was clear that they were done.

And now they're back. And sound great.

Shame that there's been no promotion or publicity to speak of. Distribution pretty poor as well. EMI haven't even tried to push it.

EMI probably have no budget... that said I bought it on pre-release, Midge was on Drivetime so there has been promotion.
I'd say there's beena enough as well because it seems plenty of people have bought it.

I'm loving it... its very Rage in Eden with overtones of Quartet, some lovely big anthemic sounds on it. Couldn't be mistaken for anyone other than Ultravox while sounding fresh... great album.
