Blueberries tasting different
Why do some taste sweet, some taste sour and others no real taste either way?
What other fruits do this, I've never tasted an apple, orange, banana, grape that was radically different from the last, like blueberries. Is this a common trait with berries? |

I always seem to get the pack where most of them taste of nothing at all! Quite annoying as they're not that cheap. Some raspberries can be a bit bland, but on the whole it's only blueberries that have such varying taste in my experience.

It can also depend on variety. Many of the soft fruits have different tastes depending on their variety and which country they are grown in.
The taste of blueberries does vary greatly, I like a tart blueberry myself! |

I've had some lovely blueberries in the past eight days.

Blueberries are one of my favourite fruits. Some just taste a little different as they are probably more ripe, or were picked longer ago

Why have they become so trendy?
I have tried them a few times now and they have little or no taste compared to, say, a raspberry or a strawberry. Are my taste buds maybe just not receptive to the taste of blueberries that makes them so popular these days or I have I just been really unfortunate and always bought the tasteless ones? |

Maybe you tasted some bad ones. |

I'll tell one thing, if you're ever feeling a bit shit or groggy, eat a bowl of blueberries and they will lift you right out of it. They are the only fruit known to do this as they are so rich in healthy goodness. I love their fresh, crisp, and clean taste. Best served cold from the fridge with a dollop of creme fraiche. You seriously can't beat it...

Maybe, but I have tried them on many occasions from various different supermarkets in the hope that the previous ones were just a bit tasteless.

Adding sugar would surely take away the health benefits?
Of any fruit in fact. |

They are popular because they are extremely high in anti-aging, anti-cancer and pro heart compounds.
Makes a great marketing slogan though! |

The anti-oxidant benefits of blueberries and other 'super foods' are highly over-rated and will have little (if any) effect when consumed.
Makes a great marketing slogan though! |

How so?
As a one off, it's probably not too bad, but doing it all the time is a big no-no as far as health is concerned, and eating fruit is something you should be doing every day. I think I also read an article that said insulin release negates the effect of nutrients entering the body, but that may have been specifically about EFAs. |

Sugar increases insulin release, leading to the body storing fat, and also weakens insulin sensitivity, leading to diabetes. The sugar in fruits don't have the same negative effect, but adding refined sugar will.

I think you have a much better chance of getting good ones if you buy locally grown berries from a farmer's market when they are in season. The problem is that people want every fruit to be available year round and cheaply, and who knows what they have to do to make that happen. The worst, most tasteless blueberries I've ever had had obviously been frozen, possibly for a long time.

Strangely, the nicest ones i've had were Sainsbury's basic ones but maybe I was eating them out of season before or something.

I do love blueberries though. Blueberries and porridge are a match made in heaven. |

It is only Vitamin C (anti-oxidants) that has proven health benefits without any real negatives, unless one counts the sugar.
