I've liked him from day one but do get the feeling they're trying to emulate the Den and Sharon portrayal with Den always promising his Princess that he'd turned over a new leaf.

I think Derek is great - he's the only character who makes me smile at every scene he's in (apart from the one with David Wicks and the knife, which was pretty scary) and that makes me think of Frank.

So Derek = Frank = Great.

The writers keep forgetting storyline's involving Derek like when he took over Phil's business and when he came out of prison, he just let Phil take full control again without putting up much of a fight.

Also find it hard to believe he wasn't involved in the Ben killing Heather storyline since he and Ben got on well while Phil was in prison, no other soap forgets about storylines and not finish them like Eastenders.does.

I think the problem is he was included in too many and the audience was maybe not too happy about this so they decided to drop a couple? It happens in all soaps if SL aren't going anywhere.

I think they are trying, if they are succeeding is another matter. I still want to punch him any time he comes on the screen... But I guess that's what his character is for.
If people formulate an opinion on a character- good or bad- means its a good character and that's all Im saying!

While that is true and hating him is what wer're supposed to be doing, I think we're hating him in the "wrong way". The writers expect us to hate him because he's a vicious thug and whatnot, whereas a lot of people hate him because he seems unbelievable in his role as a small-time crook trying to play the gangster. That's my main problem with him, with the bully-boy element playing second fiddle.

Exactly. I hated Archie Mitchell (as much as you can a fictional character) but he was well-written character that it didn't want to make me want to switch off the show - in fact, the more he was in it, the better. Its completely the opposite with Derek, would love it if they just axed him!

I'm starting to lose patience with the Derek character now. This villain hasn't really done much villainous things, and he's been in it for a while now. King Phil and most of the previous gangsters could all be considered worse than him from what i've seen.

You could believe that Archie was a villain because he was a mitchell. With Derek we had already been shown a backstory for him but it was subsequently retconned and it just alienated viewers. Plus Jamie is a bad actor.
