Warm weather affects cats eating habits?

Hi

Just wondering if its just me or does every owner have the same experience. During the hot and warm weather does your cat go off her food? I have 3 cats. 2 of them eat mainly dry and they eat a few nibbles then leave it, but during the day they will come back and eat. However my other cat who is on permanent medication has slowed right down and she really has gone off her food. She always does this when the weather gets warm. She will eat a couple of mouthfuls and then goes to sleep in the shade. She has her medication mixed in with food, so if she really comes to a halt, a vets visit is needed. She is normally a slow cat due to her problem but i think the weather is making it worse and normally i assume all cats tend to go off food during this heatwave.

Does your cats do this?

Yeah, my five cut right back on the food in hot weather, they always have done.

Yep, mine are eating half their usual amount. They seem ok though, still waking me up at 5am wanting food. And then not eating it.

Cats eh?

Mine doesnt eat much in the summer either, although he tends to bring in rabbits in the middle of the night and eats that instead!

But my Heidi needs her medicine and it's always mixed in with her food and she has always been eating it. If she missed a meal on odd occasions thats ok, but if a few days go past and she's not eating much...she isn't taking in her medication. I hear cooler weather is coming so maybe her appetite will come back.

I put fresh chicken out and she had 2 mouthfuls and then dissapeared into the shade. I can't leave it as eventually the chicken will dry out and then she wont of have her medication. When she doesn't have her medication...she goes down hill very quick, you'd think she is fine but than 10mins later...she is literally a deaths door and a vet visiti is needed to perk her back up. I wanna stop her from getting to that point so perhaps it's best if she doesn't eat tomorrow, get her to the vet.

Mine are eating nothing. Keep whinging for it, I put it down, but they don't eat it... Also, they're just lolling about, whining at nothing, and generally flopping on the floor like they've been shot.

You'll have to consider different ways of administering her meds - perhaps discuss with the vet.

Mine eat less unless they're in our bedroom which remains very cool (thick walls and only north-side windows are open) where they eat normally. So I'm sure that reluctance to eat is totally heat-related.

Mine is a grazer and at the moment, has been eating more at night when the temperature is cooler. Apart from a bit of chicken first thing, she doesn't seem to eat very much at all during the day.

One of my cats (let's call her T) seems to only eat once or twice a day in this weather, and her weight drops off. She also becomes neurotic, coming indoors in a rush, eating then fleeing outdoors.

T also miaows in the garden at night at the moment and can go on for 5 minutes. This happens every summer though. An unusual cat that will sit out in the rain rather than come in.

I have been feeding my parents cats and they seem to be off their food. Mine comes for it at the usual tiime but ends up having a mouthful and walking off and then going back to it later in the evening.

Update for you all, i had to take my Heidi into the vets this morning. She wouldn't eat at all and we got her in this morning and the vets are keeping her in until she perks up. Heidi hasn't had a full meal for at least and possibly more then 48hrs. And she really hasn't been taking in the medicine that she has to have. I'm really concerned cause i just spoke to my vets and they have put her on IV fluids and given her some vitamins and giving her medication through the drip...but she still hasn't ate. They are trying really hard to get her to eat but she just doesn't want to know. Heidi has been in the vets 3 times (not counting this time) and within a few hours she has perked up and began nibbling, she has yet to do this. And the vet did say if she hasn't began eating by tonight, thats when they will become concerned.

I just hope this condition of hers hasn't beaten her yet. We know that really this will keep happening and happening cause sadly there is simply no way of riding this condition she has. She has got a number of problems....Low potassium, bowl problems, intestine's problems, she can suffer from dehydration alot. I think the overall cause is tht her Immune Systems isn't right and in comes these several other problems. I'll keep you updated, thanks for your responses.

Spoken to vets this morning....Heidi still isn't eating so they are having to syringe feed her atm, however there is no vomiting and diarrhoea. Her medication is getting to her via drip, she seems ok. But the eating is a bit worrying. It's been several days now since she last had a full meal.

Heidi is on steriods...and one of the side effects of those is huge appetite and Hedid hasn't got that, so....seems concerning. But vets aren't worried atm, but i am

Bless her, hope Heidi is feeling better soon and the IV fluids etc will work their magic and give her a bit more of an appetite, wishing her a speedy recovery x

Good news!!!

Just got off the phone with vets and Heidi has perked right up. She has finally eaten by herself, she literally tried to bite the nurse's hand off (yes, thats Heidi when she is in good shape) She seems much brighted and her toilet seems to be ok. We can bring her home tomorrow morning which is fantastic news.

When the vet said she literally bit her hand whilst giving her the fish...thats when i knew Heidi was getting better. I've had her for 3yrs and i know the signs to look out for when she is feeling unwell and i know when she is feeling great, although she'll never be 100% fit and healthy.

I'm so glad...cause the other times she's been in i've always had good news within the first few hours, this time..i didn't get the good news until today. She was admitted yesterday. Now im waiting for her return, but also waiting for this to happen again cause it will, it's just a matter of time. After a few weeks she's gotta go back to get her front tooth taken out, bless her.

The only time my cat ever goes off his food is when he's ill. He's been eating just as hungrily as he always has but I have noticed he likes going out a lot more so he's probably building up his appetite as well,

The Beast is hardly eating anything at the mo.

Always been the same in hot weather, used to worry me a bit when he was younger and I would try and tempt him with random tasty stuff, but he would pick at it and go outside and crash out under the bush.

The last few days, he has eaten about one sachet of food a day, winter months he would snarf the whole box if he could

Nowadays when its hot, I don't bother about feeding him until he comes in and asks, then I put it down straight away because he is obviously peckish.

Unlike said winter months when he gets told to wait, or that he has had enough and the 'cafe' is closed.

None of mine ever eat less if it's hot. Probably because it's always hot. They do eat a phenomenal amount though.

Heidi came home today...however the good news hasn't lasted.

Good news hasn't lasted long. Vets believed Heidi was well enough to come home and she seemed fine, but she isn't eating still. They did say they had trouble getting her to eat but they believe it was due to stress of being in that place. Heidi was well hydrated and was much brighter ergo they let her out.

She got home and she seemed great, put fish down for her...she didn't want to know. We've tried now for several hours and she just doesn't want to eat, and we've noticed she isn't as bright and perky as she has been in the past...we all know our pets and we know when all isn't well and Heidi isn't. We contacted our vets and they said they aren't worried yet but if she still hasn't ate tomorrow morning she's gotta go back and have some tests done cause there may be YET ANOTHER problem developing. It's one thing after another and i hate doing this to her, she keeps going through this and i dont want to stress her out further. And to add more damage..Heidi is very slim atm and if she not eating...the weight will just drop off her and plus she wont be getting her medication. Also....vets believed she is prone to cancer atm.

I dunno whats left to do..
