Poor Heidi, I really feel for you I know how hard it is when they are poorly we had this last year with Charlie, it was a roller coaster of being unwell getting better then being unwell again, all I can say is take each day as it comes and cherish the moments with Heidi give her lots of love and be there for her x

We got Heidi in 2009 and we knew something wasn't quite right but she always seemed bright and vibrant, allbeit a little bit slow...but some cats are like that. Come 2010, thats when it all started and since then..just as you said it's been a case of being well...unwell...well again and back to unwell. With Heidi she hasn't got a sole problem...it's a number of them. Low Potassium, bowl and instestine problems and she can suffer from dehyrration. She can't absorb much of the vitamins and nutrients from food and she may have some sort of immune system problem where it can just attack the good cells in her body. Luckily it's all be controlled via medication and everytime she went downhill and became unwell...a few days at the vets and Heidi was bright again.

But this time it's different...i can just see it in her eyes. Many wont understand unless they have pets, but between the owner and pet it's like a message of some sort...as if her eyes tell me i can't fight anymore...i just want to sleep. It breaks my heart cause for 2yrs she has always fighted this off, always built herself back up. Not this time. It's breaking my heart, i just want her to be well and dandy. Maybe i'm panic a bit too much and seeing into the future of things that might not happen yet. But i can't help be feel like this cause i know in my heart something isn't right. I've been crying all day.

I will take each day as it comes and comfort and storke her loads. Tomorrow if no improvement has been made, it's back to the vets.

Sadly Heidi had to be pts this morning.

After Heidi came out of vets on Saturday...we noticed something wasn't right so we rushed back into vets Sunday morning. I'll try and explain everything, but sorry in advance if i jumble things up i'm still in shock and total utter devestation at losing one of the smartest cats i knew.

We took her back in Sunday morning and vets did numerous test to understan why she weren't eating. Sunday afternoon she begaan eating and she was perking up fine and looked as if things were getting better. However Monday morning vets called and said she passed some diaarhea in the night but it was jet black, due to be filled with blood. So Heidi was losing blood. They tested her and her blood count if im correct was around 35%, but it dropped right down to 15%...so she was losing tones of blood pretty rapidly. During this time she began eating and was really bright so i wasn't that concerned until about 20mins later when vets called back to say they may have to rush her to a specialisy for an emergency blood transfusion and once that was done test her bone marrow as they believe that was the cause of the bleed. We rushed down to the vets and they explained this all again. We asked out straight wherever it was best for her to sleep cause she was pretty weak so was unlikely to take the stress of a blood transfusion. They gave us 3 choices, 1 to get an emergency blood transfusion, 2 wait 24hrs to see if she passes more blood, thinking maybe the loss of blood was a one time thing and it would have stopped or 3, PTS. Now although Heidi seemed upbeat and bright....an blood transfusion would have been VERY distressing for her and it would have hurt. Now had we waited 24hrs to see what would happen vets truly believed she would have suddenlly spiraled very quick and passed in the night.

Overall Heidi had many problems and cause of this she may have not been able to be saved even with the transfusion, plus she would have been put through such an ordeal and with her being weak it wasn't really the best thing. So the only choice left was to put her to sleep where she can be pain free and enjoying life up there with my other girl Suschi.

And so we made that awful and devestating choice. Before we did, me and my family all saw her and she was rolling around and purring very loudly. Me and my brother left and my parents stayed with her til she was gone.

I'm absolutely devestated. She fought all these conditions she had for yrs and she always bounced back. Maybe she couldn't do it anymore. Did i make the right choice, should i had waited? I dunno. But vets advised us that it's best for the animal to sleep. It hurts cause Heidi was developing loads of white blood cells to try and fight back.....so she was trying and trying.

I am so sorry to hear about Heidi, I can absolutely relate to how you are feeling right now as you know we lost Charlie last year it hurt so much. You had done everything you could for Heidi and in the end you have done the kindest thing and let her go to sleep and be free of pain, I know it doesn't feel like like that right now because you are hurting but it was the right thing to do, please remember all the happy times you had together and cherish those, sending you love and hugs xxx

I'm really sorry for your loss. I've been keeping up to date with Heidi's progress so it's sad to read this outcome You are always so kind and sympathetic to others who have lost their pets, lots of words of wisdom so you know you have done the right thing and relieved Heidi from any more suffering.

I must admit I would have found it extremely traumatic to have my cat put to sleep if she was rolling on her back, purring - but I know that purring is also a mechanism used by cats to make themselves feel better when they are in pain or ill and my own cat continued to purr while she was ill. It was a brave decision by you and your family and, as you say, you need to be guided by the vet's expert opinion on prognosis.

Fairyfeet, thanks for your words. I will cherish my time with Heidi. She was such a smart, intelligant and very cheeky little girl. She did look scrappy but to me she was adorable.


Thanks. It's horrible to read that owners have lost their beloved pets and i hate reading things like this cause i don't want to wish this pain on anyone. We love our pets like our own and when they go, there is such a void. Me and my family were eating and Heidi alway woke up and appeared below my feet literally telling me 'give me food' lol. And when i looked down today...no Heidi. It hurts very much but i know she fought right til the end and thats what she was...a fighter til the end.
