The final task which saw teams made up from some of the best fired contestants from the seires, was always one of my favs each year.

Why was there no task with returning fired contestants?
This has changed since the prize became the investment rather than a job. The final is now the interview stage where the 4 remaining contestants are grilled by the Lord's lackeys over their business plans.
I actually prefer it this way. The interview episode is always the best.
Never really liked the previous set up with the 'final task' as it always felt a bit pointless. There was usually not much to choose between the two candidates and it never felt like it could be won or lost on the outcome of the task. It always seemed like a task for the sake of it.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
Returning candidates were never really the focus in those types of tasks anyway - Just look at Series 4; they're barely mentioned.
There tended to be much more focus on the returning contestants in the earlier series : Ben Leary stumping for Tim, Paul Torrisi and Saira fighting all night, the knock-down drag-out never-ending brawl that was Michelle's team in the final task, Simon having to bribe his team with a free trip to Spain to get them all to calm down. Towards the end they all started behaving themselves much better.
I prefer the interview being the final task, but I do think Simonwon his series on the final task, he trounced Kristina and it turned out the job offer was similar.
That final task where all the previous contestants come back never really felt like a real task to me anyway.
The criteria for who won usually tended to be as arbitrary and as barmy as many of the decisions made by Lord Sugar this year.
Somebody looked to a be a clear winner yet the other guy was chosen as the winner. Never made sense. The reason for the winner of that task was sometimes based on who had performed better over the series according to Lord Sugar.
So I don'[t think it meant anything or had any real bearing on who deserved to win that particular task.
Apparently when that task is filmed I understand that both contestants have been working for Lord Sugar for 6 months anyway.
So it has been suggested before that the winner is based on who he wanted to hire anyway.
So maybe it was a pointless exercise of which it's sole purpose was for entertainment reasons only perhaps?
