Girls Aloud by far. Simply because they had AMAZING songs, brilliantly crafted and different from everything else around. Plus they're all likeable, imo. And they were/are lucky enough to have Nicola Roberts, who I think is a great talent (check out her solo album) and very underrated, imo.

I also loved Sugababes versions 1 & 2. Spice Girls were fun although I think a lot of their songs (and singing except for Melanie C) was pretty poor at the best of times!). But Viva Forever and Too Much are fantastic songs!

Plus Bananarama. Again not brilliant singers but they had brilliant songs on the whole.

When I read the title I just had to come on and mention The Slits but you beat me to it. RIP Ari Up.

Anyone remember BItch? The Runaways, the Go Go's? The Bangles even, Susannah Hoffs was/is actually a pretty good guitarist.

Most Girl bands seem to have come from America. Britain has produced The Belle Stars (who grew out of The Bodysnatchers), Toto Cohelo and Bananarama but the Americans were more authentic.

There was music before the year 2000 you know.

No doubt about it, Girls Aloud, Mis Teeq, Sugababes and the Saturdays. When I was younger I also listed to The 411 as well before they split up!

Ooops. Forgot to mention Fanny!! I remember their slogan "Fanny has Balls".
Girl groups nowadays do nothing for women. It was all about feminism in the earlier days. Bands like The Saturdays are just shallow airheads with nothing to say.

But I'm just a GrumpyOldMan so what do know?

Spice Girls (good pop songs....always originals...the biggest girl group of all time but not the best in terms of talent but a great pop act all the same)
Sugababes v1 (had an urban edge, very fresh sound)
Bananarama (consistant in the charts...did well in the US too!)
Sugababes v2 (more commercially successful than v1...but v1 are still my preferred line up)

Little Mix if managed correctly will be right up there....they should be busy releasing song after song constantly for 2-3 years and build up a repertoire (which is what Leona should have done) But Cowell isn't the best at handling artists....he specializes in dealing with puppets and clowns
Will Young (his best winner...which wasn't the result he wanted)got away from him quickly and is still around....Leona has a great voice but currently is stiffed....the other winners have faded away....I hope this doesn't happen to Little Mix....I would hope Cowell left these to someone else to guide the way.

Thought I'd mention Eternal released some good early stuff

The Bangles I think are the very best girl group all time (they had it all, some top songs, possibly the sexiest female in pop as their lead singer she was hot in the 80's and she still is now in her fifties....they played instruments, harmonised well and had a hand in writing most of their songs)

Went for Sugababes line up 2 because they have the most songs I love.

Also big fan of Mis-Teeq, All Saints and The Saturdays. Oh and Girls Aloud.
