The Matsui DVD225 (from Currys/Dixons) is a cracker for £45 or so. I got one for my daughter, then when my Philips bit the dust I got one for myself. It plays everything in all formats, has digital out, RGB, S-video.............great little box...........Oh, and its small too!

Rgds,
Scorp

Anything from Phillips is generally very reliable. Basically, from my experience, I'd recommend almost anything EXCEPT FOR Bush.

Just to let you know Bush, Alba, Goodmans and Matsui are the same company, and they use the same products just with the different badges on the front so if you have bad luck with one of their numerous 'brands' dont try any of the others!

we've got an alba downstairs. Its got a plenty of features but its very slow and it has a dodgy remote. I was trying to use the multi angle feature the other day on one of my dvds and it took about 10 seconds to change angles when i pressed the button...

Davestar dont think Matsui are linked to these companies. The Matsui brand is owned by the Dixons group and they get different companies to make their goods, including Mico.

Ive had a very bad experience with the Hitachi DVD Player - yes the one at £45. It looks nice, and plays well for about 2 hours. The first player then began to skip, jump chapters and then finally just sat there. Only by removing the plug from the wall was I able to restart the machine. I took it back and had a replacement. This one lasted just under 2 weeks, before it started to exhibit the same problem. Then last night, I was met by a grinding noise as I tried to retrieve my disc. I returned it to Argos again today, and changed it for the Philips DVD Player which only cost £5 more. After this, I will not go near any Hitachi product again.

You can get quite a nice 'Technika' one for Tesco for around £40 at the moment. We've had one for around a year now, and it's been great.

The Philips DVD player that I got from Argos is the DVP520.

Its around the same size as my sky digibox and is probably 1.5 inches high. I havent had any problems with this machine at all. Its multi region and allegedly RCE Compatible too (although I have no way of testing this) and is available in quite a few places. Boots sell the machine, so you could get Boots Points and it is the same price as argos.

This Link has a better picture of the player and shows the connections at the rear of the machine.

How's about this for a bargain-not sure about its merits, though!
