Hey, so making a birthday cake tomorrow and bought some Carnation Condensed Milk in order to make caramel.

As this process can take 2 1/2 hours and then cooling time, is there anyway I can boil it tonight, allow it to cool and then use it in the morning, or would it solidify?

If you keep it in the tin it will stay moist. You can do it much quicker by boiling the condensed milk in a pan for about 5 mins if you are stretched for time. Just make sure the hob isn't too ot and stir all the time.

Thanks strictmachine. Do you get the same colour / consistency when boiling straight on the hob?

Yes, absolutely. Just keep an eye on it because it thickens quite suddenly. I have only done it in a non stick pan and wouldn't necessarily advise you to do it that way if your pans aren't non stick.

What an awful website.

They've sold that for a while but it used to be labelled Dulce De Leche.

Thanks for the advice guys. I heated it straight on the hob with a little butter and sugar. Turned out just fine, and in under 10 mins.

Why did you add sugar?

I read on some website, that if adding the milk to the saucepan, you should heat butter and a bit of sugar first?

The ancient recipe i have for this is
1 tin of condensed milk
2oz sugar
4oz butter/marg
2 tablespoons of golden syrup!
This comes from my Grandma who used to be an amazing cook!
