I love Sushi, but find Yo Sushi isn't that great. I have this little family run place near my work and you see the fish delivered in the morning for the lunch rush. When fresh, it's amazing. Favourite is thick cut salmon sashimi with sliced onion, salad leaves and good quality soy sauce.

........pick up one of those little sushi trays from the supermarket to give you an idea before venturing into Japanese places............

I like it but it always seems very expensive for a few mouthfuls of rice with shavings of fish/veg

That wasabi sauce is fantastic tho'...............

It's fishy and nasty. Never buy it.

I agree with the above poster about trying one of the little trays from the supermarket. The vegetarian ones are a nice beginners one if you're not sure about raw fish yet. They're in the fridge section with the sandwiches and other lunchtime foods.

We know an all you can eat sushi bar, which feels like you're getting more for your money, as I think Yo Sushi has a system where you pay per plate. Also with all you can eat I think you're more inclined to try new things as it's all included.

As to what sushi's like, it's cold, full of delicate and strong flavours (wasabi - yikes!) and surprisingly filling

It's lovely! The rice and seaweed against the soy and wasabi are really tangy. It's not all fish and meat, so start off with something like mini cucumber rolls.

Don't worry about raw fish. What most people think is sushi is actually sashimi - a completely different dish.

Enjoy!

Even the sushi without fish in it?

I had some once which was just rice wrapped in seaweed, and yes, it was fishy.

Some sort of fish oil or paste in it I guess.

It's one of the biggest misconceptions of sushi that it is raw fish.

Yep, I've had sushi with thinly sliced raw beef.

Advise to OP: stay away from the supermarket offerings. They're usually bloody awful.

I'm generally not too keen on raw fish, with one notable exception: maatjes haring (soused herring). Next week the new season starts, can't wait to sink my teeth in soft roll with herrign and chpped onions.

The simple answer to 'what is x like?' is to try it! What's the worst that could happen? It's perfectly edible, it's not going to kill you. You'll either like it or not like it.

It's all very well having raw fish but that means that the parasitic fish worms are alive, well and wriggling !:

Yes, because we are constantly bombarded by news stories of people dying after visits to Yo Sushi!

Raw fish is frozen to kill the parasites. In the EU there are regulations (surprise, surprise) that stipulate that fish that is meant for raw consumption must be frozen at -20C for at least 24 hrs.

Supermarket sushi is the devils own work, really if you want to try it don't start with that. It should be fresh and definitely not refrigerated.

I love supermarket sushi. It pretty much ruined my day when Tesco was sold out of it the other day...

I really want to try some proper sushi though.

In sushi, the fish is cured - a bit like beef is for carpaccio.

And yes - it's lovely stuff. Expensive, but lovely.

Try and find a place that sells good quality sushi ingrediants and make your own.

Cook everything to death before you eat it then. You will miss out on a lot.

To have your first try of Sushi, I would definitely not make my own.

I remember making my own for the first, what a mess.

Try to find a restaurant, not a chain and try Sushi.

I have never been to Japan, but have worked in Singapore a few times, I had Sushi over there in a few restaurant, Fantastic

Yikes! Making sushi is harder than it looks. Definitely not for a sushi beginner.

OP, I wouldn't bother with the supermarket stuff - it's generally not very good. The only way to find out is to try it, so go on over to your local sushi bar. The good thing about those places is that you can try small portions of various different dishes, so you won't be stuck with a big plate of food that you don't like. The worse that can happen is that you hate it and have to pop into the takeaway on your way home!
