Don't worry C7 - I got the same reaction in our thread when I suggestion we get Barton from Newcastle ages ago!

I can't help wondering if this whole "M'Vila is the new Vieria" is similar to the same thing being levelled at Pogba? They are both huge physically, black and play in midfield. It all seems to be a bit lazy.

RE: Barton

I think we do miss a heavyweight Keane like character.

He wasn't exactly angelic - and it won many psychological battles.

A friend of mine lives in France and gets to watch a lot more French football. He raves about this guy. Reckons he can pass, tackle and shoot, but unlike Tiote isn't a yellow card collector. Phillipe Auclair the french sports journo. thinks he's destined for great things too.

I don't see this link between Barton and Keane.

Keane was a sensational player, Barton is an average player who is a wrecking ball anywhere he goes.

He's a complete unadulterated tw*t.

My bottom line is I would worry for the world we live in today. Would Cantona have got past Selhurst Park in todays media?

I doubt it.

The following day The Sun had a pic of his boot on the front page and proclaimed it to be a "lethal weapon", after a couple of days reality took over.

Imagine ramping that incident up today with the internet, Facebook and twitter?

Joey Barton was involved in a fairly minor incident yet he is portrayed as the anti-christ and as a result has got a 12 match ban for what amounts to very little.

Dangerous road to go down.

If we are talking true utopia, then, Messi, Xavi, Inestia, and Yaya, would be my utopia.

If we are trying to be somewhat realistic, then, I would say, Alba, Ganso, Sahin, Hernanes, and Solado.

I agree that it is lazy to automatically compare the two, but M'villa is the real deal in my opinion. I really think that he would be a great addition to our squad.

Being realistic the two in bold won't be coming to us. Can't say I know a great deal about Sahin. Alba is on our radar allegedly, but I'd prefer Llorente over Soldado

Im a huge Keane fan but he was a complete nightmare as a personality. Alcohol, Haaland, Ireland etc. Lets get real here.

Again another example of a player who would struggle under todays spotlight.

I say that as a huge Keane Fanboi!

You cannot compare eras though, what was punishable by one set of rules at one time, is different to todays rules.

Different eras come with diffetent challenges.

The problem with that is the punishments haven't really changed - the ability for the public to whip themselves up into a frenzy has.

That is the very point.

Minor things are blown up into major things now and then forgotten all about.

Remember the outcry for rule changes when Henry handled the ball for France? Are we still campaigning for handball being punished by death or have we got angry for a while and forgotten all about it now?

I remember as far back as Paul Davis getting an 8 match ban or chinning Glenn Cockerill. Nowadays what would he get? Cantona got 9 month ban for that kung fu kick, yet Duncan Ferguson got to do some bird for nutting the Dundee United player.

It was a Raith Rovers player (Jock McStay) and the reason Ferguson got jail was because he had a suspended sentence hanging over him so any criminal activity would result in an automatic jail term. He was being watched for anything that could be seen as "stepping out of line" which would be in beach of his suspended sentence conditions. Being caught on tv sticking the head on another man regardless of circumstance was deemed enough and he was jailed.

Yes that may very well be true, but if you don't read twitter, or read the newsapapers, it is very easy to get away from all that frenzy.

I thought Swarez was the originator of all that hate to do with handball, after he did that to Ghana? (Or was the Henry thing before the Swarez thing, I forget now??)

Things only get blown up, if you pay enough attention to them, if you don't then, they don't.

I stand corrected. Didn't realise he had 'form'
