CD Technology - what's todays best?
When I first started to buy records, we were only just leaving the 78 rpm shelac era and moving to mono vinyl. Then came CDs, and, being just as interested in new technology as I was in pursuing the "closest approach to the original sound", I quickly embraced it, only to be initially disappointed with what seemed to me to be a hard brittle sound. Since those early days, though, technology has improved considerably. Among the best sounding CDs, in my opinion, were, and still are, the Mercury Living Presence redordings, due, I think, to their use of single stereo mics, and the absence of multi-track mixing. I stopped buying discs several years ago because I had sufficient music on LP, CD and cassette to satisfy my needs. Now, once again, I am starting to get the urge to start buying some modern recordings (I'm not into downloading because I think compression will compromise the sound quality) and wonder if there are any significant advances in CD technology that will offer an even higher degree of audio fidelity than those early Mercury recordings I mentioned.
