No power ballads in the top 40 anymore?

Ever since the charts went totally download, perhaps even before that, there have been very few power ballads making it to the top part of the charts. I'm thinking of songs like

Jennifer Rush - Power of Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ESMt4rnn3c

Bryan Adams Everything I Do For You...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGoWtY_h4xo

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Power Of Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShN8UIk5-mw

Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmbw8OycJrE

Glenn Medeiros - Nothing Is Gonna Change My Love For You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kybeq2dWBf8

These songs have memorable melodies even if some people think they're a bit cheesy. Wnatever happened to Glenn Mederios?

The charts are full or urban pop acts but few ballads. The X Factor winner usually covers a ballad as his debut single but that's just a cover - a version of an old song. It's not a new ballad.

What about 'These Dreams' by Heart!

"What about 'These Dreams' by Heart!"

Wasn't that recently a cover hit for a singer? I think it was.

No, that was "Alone"

'These Dreams' by Heart was a 'Smash Hits' single of the week WAY back in 1988. I don't think it was a cover- have to check that one

'These Dreams' by Heart was an original, I was confusing it with their song "Alone':

Thank, RayofLight, for correcting me.

Surely Adele does power ballads and she's the biggest artist on the planet right now.

I think that's a shame, but I also think power ballads were an "of their time" thing. I'll always miss epic songs like I'd Do Anything For Love and Total Eclipse of the Heart though. I think power ballads of the 80s and 90s were genuinely brilliant.

You & I - Lady Gaga
Set fire to the rain (and other songs) - Adele
Who you are - Jessie J
Picking up the pieces - Paloma Faith

Plus countless others. Pointless thread is pointless.

Songs need radio play to sell and be popular, the radio only likes recent Dance R&B and pop.

No, no and no. Particularly the last. These are not power ballads and you will do well not to tar their names (except Adele and Jessie but they're shit for other reasons). Listen to Michael Bolton - that's a power ballad.

I think that power ballads have had their time to be honest. As much as I like them, they sadly don't fit in to the current musical climate of overproduced boyband drivel, generic "dance" music and reality TV show contestants. Although Alyssa Reid incorporated a great power ballad into Alone, she made a total hash of it- taking both the power and the ballad out of the song!

No. A power ballad doesn't mean it has to be old fashioned. Sorry to break the devastating news.

A power ballad, by definition, is powerful. The instrumentation of none of those songs is remotely powerful or 'spacious' enough to be considered as such, except maybe GaGa's.

I don't think I'd call even that a power ballad. I love the song but it's not even close to something like It's All Coming Back by Celine Dion, or even Whitney's version of I Will Always Love You in terms of epic scope/
