The Best of cd's.....

Do you buy them on the best of or greatest hits cd ? When you already have them ? No not me

Kylie has another one out, and isnt Britany Spears doing another one ? Why

we have them all already on the other cd's, so why buy them all again..Plus on itunes im forever doing loads of playlists etc with Kylie and making them up for my ipod..simple, and a waste of money..Ok if there is one i really want i might buy it, but otherwise i save my money

So they can put one or two new songs on them and charge you full price all over again

Don't blame the artists

Artists have no control over a release of a Greatest hits. However some artists choose to get involved. I watched an interview with Pink. Her label were gonna do her GH without her but she got on board, chose the tracklisting and even added two new songs which proved to be two big hits.

There's always artists I've kind of liked but never quite enough to go out and buy their albums, so a singles collection is a good compromise.

I've got singles collections from quite a few artists whose complete albums I own because in the pre-digital days it was good to be able to listen to the singles all together. Nowadays it's a redundant idea because you can just compile a singles playlist on your iPod.

There are certain Greatest Hits collections that are definitive.

Prince's The Hits/The B Sides is his definitive hits collection, which is much better than the Ultimate collection.

Saint Ettiene has a few out but for me 'Too Young To Die' is their definitive hits collection.

Earth, Wind and Fire 'The Collection'.

Kate Bush 'The Whole Story'

Madonna 'The Immaculate Collection'

Sometimes I just like the tracklisting and I buy into it.

Sometimes I want to keep my collection going.

It doesn't kill anyone, so no harm done

I rarely buy them. Only ones I have are Sugababes - Overloaded: The Singles Collection, Spice Girls' Greatest Hits and the two ABBA Gold albums. I usually prefer to download the original singles or albums. I sometimes make iTunes playlists of all the singles. I have one for The Saturdays.

I find them to be useful when I'm getting into a new band, hearing the singles can help draw in new listeners.

I love hits albums usually when i want an overview of their "best bits" before exploring an entire back catalogue.

Done it with Prince

Done it with David Bowie

Done It With garbage recently

Done It With No Doubt too

And then i go back and buy studio albums etc....also if an artist i love releases a hits with sonvs not on studio albums i own and/or new material on it i buy em too

I usually like hits albums, there are some acts where i wait for greatest hits, black eyed peas for example would be one them so i want a best of from them.

With someone like Kylie,i buy to keep the collection complete, but with Kylie;s current best of im waiting until the price is reduced as it offers nothing new and i have everything on it 10 times over, however had time bomb been included i would have purchased straight away.

I thought I maybe had a Greatest Hits album or two, but apparently not.

However, I do have a bunch of Tribute albums, which, naturally, contain the band's greatest hits.
In particular:

For The Masses - Depeche Mode tribute
Reggatta Mondatta - The Police Reggae tribute (oddest tribute album I own)
Take Warning - Operation Ivy tribute
and The Duran Duran Tribute Album (full of covers by Ska and Punk bands like Goldfinger and Deftones).

and I've been tempted to get The Bird and The Bee's Hall & Oates tribute because it's just so damned awesome.

Same

Especially if you can't be bothered to go through their albums

For certain people, it allows the bypass of album filler. Some of us don't have ipods (i know, mortifying!).

Where would the music industry be without Queen's greatest hits or Abba's gold?

Pink's felt like a brand new album of great songs, probably because she wasn't overexposed.

Careful with that though. While I suppose it is useful to test the waters of an established band, you do miss quite a lot of gems.

Some of my favorite songs are b-sides... songs that are too nuanced to be considered hits. They're the ones that grow on you, the ones where you find something new and interesting every time you hear it.

They're a great starting point for when you're just beginning to discover someones music. I've bought a few in the past and then branched off to other albums by looking at what songs I've enjoyed on the best of the most.

Saying that, I do hate cheap compilation albums.

That's true, but if you associate their songs with memories... Steps latest album for instance. There's likely no great album tracks but their singles have childhood memories and aee quite decent side by side.
If it was a beatles best of, I'd sway the other way.
