The label isn't important. Radiohead didn't become and Indie band when their 6 album deal with EMI/Parlophone ended. They have always been in the same genre.

I see youre in Arizona (a very nice state it is too), dunno about over there but acts refered to as 'indie' here certainly dont fit the original definition now. As many have said, the terms evolved to mean a sound.
