Hmmm.. interesting question on The Million Pound Drop: which was the officially highest-rating TV programme on Christmas Day 2011?

Four programme titles appeared, none of them Downton Abbey!

Quite right too. More people watched EastEnders on Christmas Day than watched anything else.

People might have caught up on Downton Abbey in the next 7 days, thereby pushing its official ratings up, but to me Christmas Day ratings will always be how many people watched it on the day - and EastEnders got the highest live audience.

Ah but the question was 'officially' the highest rating - in the officials, wasn't Downton Abbey top?

Now if they had said 'in the overnights'...

EastEnders was officially the highest rated show on Christmas Day, no other programme was watched by more people on that day - according to the official overnight figures

Official ratings are on www.BARB.co.uk which says EastEnders got 11.33, Downton Abbey got 11.59. The question was "What was the most watched TV show on Christmas Day 2011, according to official audience figures?" As it says 'official' in the question, the answer to that is Downton Abbey. The 'unofficial' most watched was EastEnders.

New Channel 5 show takes aim at the X Factor:
Whilst I don't rate Chris Evans particularly, it will be interesting to see how this pans out. Sing For Your Supper is one of those shows that's either going to be great or terrible, with absolutely no middle ground. I kind of like the idea behind it though.

Would the C5 of 5 years ago be looking to work with someone like Chris on a raft of new entertainment commissions? Would they be bidding for Premier League rights for that matter either? Absolutely not.

Chris Evans is a big coup for Channel5. Im not sold on this new singing show but hopefully they can develop other entertainment formats for him and then maybe show them around Big Brother or Celebrity BB.

He knows a thing or two about light entertainment and how to make it work, I'll give him that. It's more his presenting style which is not for me, but the channel could do with his creative input as they lack entertainment hits outside of Big Brother. Not convinced the singing show will work either, but I liked this quote:

"No one gets hurt, no one feels dirty or less of a person after watching it.”

I'm in 100% agreement with him that we need more light entertainment shows particularly on a Saturday night that fit that criteria. Fun shows for all the family that don't take themselves too seriously.

ITV1 HDs has to be added to that to make the comparison fair.

BBC News reported the official ratings: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-16394970

That Ch5 show sounds interesting. I think a Ch5 lineup like this would be gold on a Friday:

A singing show (so the one just announced)- 7pm-8pm
The Bachelor- 8pm-9pm
Big Brother LIVE Eviction- 9pm-10:15pm
Person of Interest: 10:15pm-11:15pm

I think that would be gold. Yes, this Friday they have BB eviction, followed by The Bachelor but I feel that a Ch5 lineup could be so strong. As Thursday night is E4 night, I reckon Ch5 can thrive on this on a Tuesday against the ITV flopzone in the summer:

Melissa and Joey: 8pm-9pm
Big Brother OR if it's not on, a CSI sort of show OR Castle: 9pm-10pm
Whitney- 10pm-11pm

Two comedy shows, with a serious programme in the middle.

We know Ch5 have Person Of Interest, but could also grab a number of other new shows, maybe even Nikita?

I think Ch5 wont put Person of Interest on Fridays after BB because the two audiences are quite a lot different. PoI is something for fellas and on another night like Monday or Tuesday at 9pm or 10pm after CSI, it can rate really well.

What Ch5 needs from The Bachelor this season is to rate even better than last season so that in the future, I hope they can bring it back at 9pm on Fridays at a time of the year BB isnt being shown. That gives another 2 new shows at 10pm a chance to rate well being shown after BB and also after The Bachelor.

Only when adding in viewers who watched the programmes after Christmas Day. Therefore, having no impact on the official figures, released on Boxing Day morning, which showed EastEnders was the highest watched show on Christmas Day.

This comes down to a very, very simple fact. It is not possible to dispute the following statement:

More people watched EastEnders on Christmas Day than watched any other television programme.

Nikita is a new show, it just ended its 2nd season this year.

I've only seen the pilot but I intend on catching up, but i'm sure another channel has the rights anyway

Fish & chips will at least fill you up. A record deal that only lasts 5 minutes will soon leave you feeling empty.

I think Charnham was thinking about the original series, which was shown on Channel 5.

I agree the aboves true but the question on MPD asked was confusing cos they said official. By saying official, some people can mistakenly think they are referring to BARB.co.uk official ratings. Therefore the question asked by Million Pound Drop was a bit confusing. Why did they have to say 'official' in the question? They shouldve asked 'what was the most watched Christmas Day show according to figures released on Boxing Day?'

Well I suppose so, but then you could also say the question didn't specify it was in the UK, so in that case The Queen's Speech should have been the answer.

Obviously I wasn't suggesting for Ch5 to show the original series

I thought as the weather was so foul and wintrish, we'd relive the joys of Christmas past!

Yes - BARB get a bit sniffy on their website, saying overnights shouldn't be regarded as 'unofficial' as they meet the gold standard yada yada yada. But the press still use 'unofficial' and 'official', as most normal people wouldn't understand 'consolidated'.
