It'd suit that slot nicely and rate very well, as it gets 7m+ against TXF so deserves a special in my view.

I've just remembered they've also got a Call The Midwife Christmas special. It could be quite difficult to schedule that on the main day as unlike Strictly they'd probably be very reluctant to put it against Corrie, and then there's Downton in the way too. It could go on the Sunday before Xmas, or indeed on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day in a plum slot.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Christmas schedule talk in the middle of Summer - I'm sure it started earlier in the year last year anyway! ”

True, I can remember schedule talk started pretty early. It is really difficult to call this year, and with Downton on ITV its hard to say what the BBC will do.

the BBC should air a two part Doctor Who story in a schedule like this

17:30 - Family Comedy (possibly from Pixar)
18:45 - BBC News
17:00 - Strictly
18:00 - Doctor Who
19:00 - EastEnders
20:00 - Doctor Who
21:00 - Comedy
21:30 - Sherlock Christmas Special
23:00 - BBC News

It would be awesome

I'm sure that it was 63%/37% split in a breakdown I saw not long ago. 37% is quite a large % for a show like BB. Also BB was knocked down around 40% last night, so it makes sense. Some people expect a 90% female skew and 10% male. It's not that over dramatic.”

Did I once read that the Next Top Model franchise skews overwhelmingly female and has the highest young female demo of any show on television?
I do think reality is far more likely to be watched by women than men as the nature of the shows seem to be aimed at women like NTM.

I think after what happened with The Royle Family last year Danny Cohen will make sure it is ready for this year, even if that means standing over Aherne and Cash as they write it! The regular series of Comedy Roadshow appears to have ended now for some reason but I can see the Christmas one becoming a bit of a tradition in that late slot.

Downton last year was proof that ITV are capable of attracting big audiences on Christmas Day aside from the soaps, so I'm fairly confident they'll air it on the day again this year, making it a bit awkward for BBC1. Aside from that and the soaps I doubt they'll have anything else of note for BBC1 to work around though, and the comedies should be fine agains Downton.

Absolutely brilliant ratings for the England game (even if it didn't go our way). The match average of 20.3m is fantastic. A breakdown would be very interesting indeed. If they'd have got through, the semi-final would have pulled in some huge figures. Guess we'll never know now, but looks like that match will be the most watched show of 2012 for sure now!

Very good ratings and I could imagine should we have faced off against Germany then a peak of 30 million would be possible if previous encounters are anything to go by.

BBC One will be as sad as the nation as a whole about the England result considering the rating the German match would've drawn considering how many people watched last night - what a sublime rating. As someone's already said, it says a lot that ITV1 held up better than it usually does on a bog standard Tuesday night though Emmerdale took a hit. I think ITV's scheduling of the soaps this tournament has been atrocious. Big Brother did ok considering the opposition; I thought it may sink slightly lower than that.

I wouldn't bet against them splitting out extra time and possibly penalities too. If the BBC are doing averages for the matches only it should be based from the opening sting to the closing sting really.

I think i'll have a nap during the parade of Nations”

Yes, the two hour parade of nations is a chore for even the most dedicated Olympics fan. I remember back in Atlanta when the games were overnight I quite conveninently managed to fall asleep as the parade began and wake up in time for the torch lighting at the end.

I think it'll rate well but don't think it'll peak over 20m and certainly won't match the average from last night - I'd say 13m-15m average with a peak of around 17-18m.

Great work DMN. BIB Should that be there twice?

Fudd, I don't think their scheduling of the soaps has been that bad. It's clever to hold back the Corries so that it can stay in the Wednesday slot as well as the Thursday one for a few weeks to get viewers ready for the switch.
Emmerdale shouldn't have been put against the England match.

I don't see that as much of an issue.

Coverage will be on BBC1 from 7pm or 7.30pm, so it will build it's audience from then - and it's a Friday night, it's not like most people have to be at work the next morning.

Even if the audience peaks at the start rather than the end, it will still have a massive audience.

Does anyone have viewing figures for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics? It would often be under the Olympic Grandstand banner. Would be interesting to see as a lot of events were late night.

However we did qualify for the quarter finals of the Euros in 1976, when it was only the last 4 with a tournament.

Great ratings for the game last night, the interest very much remains there.

Just in case any of the usual DSRPGers are on here, next season's schedule list is up if anyone wants to take a stab at doing one:

Can't find anything for Atlanta but some info for Sydney 2000:

EastEnders deserves a good rating tonight Janine, was excellent, kinda of episode which slows you down, and really makes you feel for the characters. Michael was good as well.

It's been good these past few episodes. I suppose only having it twice last week helped because it makes the episodes seem fresher and less tiring to watch. IMO that is how it should be.

Not sure why it hasn't been reported anywhere (not even in ITV Media's top 10 list), but the national news bulletin from 22.45-23.00 must have got a share of 45.7%, working back from the BBC1 primetime share.

Hard to work out the viewership for the bulletin, but it seems somewhere between 15 and 20m were watching TV between 22.45 and 23.00, meaning the BBC News got an audience of between about 7 and 9 million. Not "very low considering the lead-in", taking into account the late hour on a worknight.

I know it's completely trivial, but it's bugging me: does anyone know what aired from 23.55 to 24.00 on BBC1? John Bishop's Britain was supposed to run for 45 minutes, so it should have ended at 23.55, but the film started at 24.00 according to the BBC website. It can't have been Weatherview as that was played out at 01.35, ten minutes late. I see they dumped Room 101: Extra Storage, to get nearly back on schedule overnight.

I dont know if that is true, its not like there has only been 2 30 minute episode, we have had pretty much the same amount as normal.

2.1m for Newsroom's debut on HBO.

A pretty good, if not stellar, start - however the suggestion from a lot of the reviewers who have seen the first 4 episodes is that the show goes downhill very quickly.

For comparison,
Quote:
“2.1M debut for #Newsroom is on par with Game of Thrones debut (2.2M) but well below Boardwalk Empire (4.8M).”

Quote:
“Good news for 'The Newsroom' is 2.1 million is solid first number for 1st showing. Bad news is 2.6 million watching 'True Blood' turned off.”

In Germany, an average of 19.30m watched England v Italy match. Astonishing rating over there, equivalent to something like 14.5m watching a match involving foreign teams here in the UK. Great rating over here as well, the peak was about 0.5-1m higher than I expected.

Good of ITV Media not to try to spin yesterday's performance by their flagship channel:
Quote:
“ ITV1 struggled against the football with no programme winning the slot against the coverage. It had its second lowest all time share (8%) for any day ever and its lowest prime time share (8%) for any day ever.”

Well, apart from adding in +1 and rounding up, to get them to a more-respectable-sounding 8% primetime share (rather than 7.2%)

I like the phrase "any day ever".

even if its not true as during the 1979 strike it would have been lower

Ahh but the modern ratings universe only began in the early 80s, didn't it? Anyway, I'm sure the working-class grannies who make up ITV's core audience preferred to watch a test card than get up and change the channel to BBC1, keeping the figure above 8%
