That was excellent for BBC One, staying above a 30% share for 5 and a bit hours. News rated better than I thought it would, 6+ million on a Saturday evening is excellent.

“ITV has released their projections to advertisers for what ratings they're expecting for all of their Euro 2012 matches. Here's their predictions and they even give the timings they intend to give each broadcast:

Fri 8/6- Russia v Czech Republic (19.15-22.00): 4.74m
Sun 10/6- Spain v Italy (16.00-19.00): 5.01m
Sun 10/6- Ireland v Croatia (19.15-22.00): 6.97m

Tue 12/6- Poland v Russia (19.20-22.00): 3.79m
Wed 13/6- Denmark v Portugal (16.30-19.05): 3.75m

Sun 01/7- Final (19.15-22.00): 1.92m

Source: ITV Media

They are expecting a tournament average of 6m (including their 2 England matches). Excluding the England matches, they are projecting an overall average of 4.9m.

Previous tournaments on ITV1 averaged: Euro 2008: 4.83m, World Cup 2010: 5.29m

Important to note, those projections above are based on the whole broadcast average, not the match average. Most of those peaktime broadcasts will have 30 mins of pre-match buildup and about 25 mins of post-match analysis. Even longer for some of the 5pm and England matches. So say for example, they're predicting 12.4m for England v Ukraine, that's for the whole coverage including analysis - the match average they're expecting will be more like 17m based on a 12.4m whole coverage average (this is based on how World Cup 2010 rated in terms of coverage and match averages - usually a difference of about 4.5m between match and coverage averages of England matches).”

Great and on par of what I thought the matches would get. Great peaks. And BB held very steady and beat the previous two ratings despite facing the Ireland match. Pretty much makes sense to why they should keep it at 9pm. It's on again tonight at 9pm.

The final is shared with BBC1 I presume.

So 1.92m is what they think will watch the ITV1 effort.

I think they are wrong though, BBCs presentation is so depressing.

Casualty did well on Friday night. Wonder if the BBC will ever consider giving it a weekday slot to free up Saturdays for other things?

Euro 2012 looks a bit low for ITV1. BBC1 held up very well too with their older skewing shows. I suppose they were always going to do better on a Sunday with that line up than ITV1 would do on a Saturday night with a similar pitch.

I don't know what it is but there doesn't seem to be any atmosphere or excitment with this Euro..it just seems that people feel flat about it all..I remember Euro 2008 and there seemed to be more genuine excitment and England weren't even in the tournament!

Well It's rating really well so I completely disagree with you. I will go as far to say it's rating better than 2008.

The England match is an early start, 4pm for the programme. 5pm kick-off.

So the peak might be fairly high as the 2nd half kicks-off at 6pm, but the programme average is bound to be low.

“Let's Get Gold judging panel announced

Rio Ferdinand, Freddie Flintoff, Martine McCutcheon and Una Healy Vernon Kay to Host

ITV, THAMES and Superhero today announced the judging panel line up for Let’s Get Gold, ITV1’s brand new sport entertainment show.

The judging panel will consist of former England captain and Premier League footballer Rio Ferdinand; former English cricketer Freddie Flintoff; singer and Laurence Olivier award-winning actress Martine McCutcheon; and singer-songwriter and part of successful girl group The Saturdays, Una Healy.

Rio Ferdinand said: "I can’t wait to get started on the judging panel of Let’s Get Gold. It's set to be a fantastic show, capturing the nation’s sporting mood perfectly. I am very excited to be working with Freddie, Martine and Una in the search for new sporting stars. May the best team win!"

Freddie Flintoff said: "I’m looking forward to being a judge on Let’s Get Gold. It’ll be a new challenge for me and I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure the judging panel will all be looking for something different. I can’t wait to see what the teams have to show us."

Martine McCutcheon said: "I'm really thrilled to be part of Let's Get Gold. It's always wonderful when teams get to showcase their own special skills and abilities. I'll be looking forward to seeing some unbelievable talent and can't wait to see something fresh and different."

Una Healy said: "I’m so excited to be part of Let’s Get Gold. I’m looking forward to seeing all the sporting talent that Britain has to offer. It’ll be fun to see how these teams will put an entertainment spin on sports such as Rugby and Golf. I can’t wait to get started!"

Host Vernon Kay said: "With the Olympics just around the corner and sport fever hitting the UK this shows provides the stage for local sporting teams to show off their skills and sporting prowess in breath-taking performances. With a huge cash prize up for grabs and an all star panel of famous pundits from the worlds of showbiz and sport this series promises to be the ultimate sporting battle."

Head of Entertainment, Thames, Suzy Lamb said: "We are delighted to be confirming a line up of judges who have experience right across the sports and entertainment arenas. Teams will be displaying their skills in disciplines as wide-ranging as Martial Arts and Cheerleading, and the panel will be looking for the UK’s biggest and brightest sporting talents to showcase their skills like they’ve never been seen before."

Sebastian Scott added: ""Let's Get Gold is like the Posh and Becks of talent shows, combining Britain's two biggest passions: sport and entertainment. Such great names on our judging panel proves that we are taking sport seriously - but we also hope to throw a surprise on those viewers who wouldn't normally consider themselves to be sports fans."

ITV’s Controller of Entertainment, John Kaye Cooper said: "This is an exciting new format that challenges teams from all over the UK to entertain us with their sporting skills, and we are delighted to have such a skilled and talented group of judges to select our Let's Get Gold winners."

Let’s Get Gold is a sport meets entertainment mini-series of three pre-recorded episodes, stripped across consecutive nights. Sporting teams from across the UK will battle it out in front of a panel of celebrity pundits from the worlds of showbusiness and sport. Over three nights, 15 teams will compete to transform their sport into the most spectacular and entertaining routine.

Teams will be putting their skills to the test, performing breath-taking activities to demonstrate their sporting prowess. Motivated by a £100,000 prize fund, and judged by the panel, the show will seek to identify amateur and professional groups displaying the best technique, skill and athleticism, but also those with creativity, style and flair.

Let’s Get Gold starts on ITV1 this July.

Moving away from Grade, I'll always remember Yentob as the one who axed Eldorado, when it was actually improving a lot. Big disappointment considering it could have become a juggernaut in the BBC1 schedule, seeing how much it was improving under Corinne Hollingworth's stewardship. Wasn't Yentob's time during the mid 90s when they continued to close the gap to ITV?”

Grade saved BBC1 as its ratings under Alan Hart had slumped to 31 per cent. It was thanks to Grade and a host of new and very popular shows like Bread, In Sickness and In Healtjh, Casualty and Eastenders that the BBC fought back. He was also lucky sitcoms like Allo Allo and Only Fools and Horses soared in popularity during his tenure. And yes he did go to Channel 4 because he didn't get on with John Birt.
As for Eldorado, it was such a figure of ridicule, even with improving ratings, the BBC were embarassed by it and decided to cancel. Actually the whole Eldorado fiasco marked the start of a very lean period for BBC drama which was dominated by flops like A Year in Provence, Rhodes, Trainer, Strathblair and Rides.

if this is a sporting thing, why are there two "popstars" on the panel? one an ex soap star, and one from a group who I dont think has ever had a No1?

Maybe it should read "Lets Get Gold Flops on ITV 1 this July."
