He was also lucky sitcoms like Allo Allo and Only Fools and Horses soared in popularity during his tenure. And yes he did go to Channel 4 because he didn't get on with John Birt.
As for Eldorado, it was such a figure of ridicule, even with improving ratings, the BBC were embarassed by it and decided to cancel. Actually the whole Eldorado fiasco marked the start of a very lean period for BBC drama which was dominated by flops like A Year in Provence, Rhodes, Trainer, Strathblair and Rides.”

If i'm not mistaken that was about a female operated cab firm that was recently reinvented as Candy Cabs, Eldorado was right to be ridiculed but ratings and acting act were improving and i was gutted that was axed. The soaps today would kill for Eldorado's ratings which were 9-10 million at the end

Rides was the story of a woman who leaves the army at 40 and invests her pension into a taxi business.
Eldorado was getting 7 million when it was cancelled, the acting was picking up and the storylines weren't bad. Yet the BBC had been badly rattled by all the negative publicity it was getting and wanted rid. While 7 million now is what Corrie would get on a hot summer's night, in those days it was seen as poor in peaktime, considering the BBC wanted Eldo to be up with the big boys and pulling in 17 million an episode.

Itv might be hoping that England dont win the France match right now. If England beat France and then go on to beat Sweden, itv's England v Ukraine match would sorta become a dead rubber because England would be through to knockout stages already. If its only a draw for todays match, it's all to play for in that England v Ukraine game and it becomes absolute must-watch tv for the nation.

Well deserved for BB yesterday, it is hotting up in the house and the viewers are sticking with it.

CBS' The Tony Awards has hit an all time low with an atrocious 1.0 in 18-49 demo and 6.01m total viewers from 8-11pm. Dateline on NBC got 1.2 with 5.50m from 7-9pm.

Other original episode ratings:

7pm - 60 Minutes (CBS) - 1.1/7.88m
8pm - Secret Millionaire (ABC) - 1.5/5.35m
9-11pm - Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (ABC) - 1.5/4.61m”

James Corden effect and i'd say another reason is due to the fact the tony awards are a pile of bring poo

IIRC England V Sweden got 19m in 2006 even though England had already qualified for the next stage.

I'm not, it's a sport I've progressively got fed up with. Yet for ITV1, it's ratings gold and should England have to win their last match next week to qualify, it's the summer equivalent of TXF final for them.

That was like watching paint dry..but I am sure ITV1 will be very happy with figures tomorrow.

And as you say, as ITV1's share dropped, Channel 4's share increased to around 10% by the late 90s.”

BBC1's share fell to 25% in the last week of June 1993.

I reckon it will have peaked at 14 million and should England struggle next week with a draw and a few minutes left of play, then 20 million is possible, unless of course they're knocked out by their second group game and next Tuesday will be as pointless as a friendly.

On BBC One: France v England analysis
On ITV1: France v England analysis

It's good to have variety.

So Matt Barbet is moving to Daybreak to present the 6am hour. He'll get less viewers there than he does on 5 News at 5 but probably more money.

No surprise given he had a good relationship with the old 5 News editor who now works on Daybreak.

You keep plucking predictions out of thin air that change every five minutes, I reckon 15m, 13m, 11m, 16m peak, 8m average, 12m, 10, 14m...

With a draw under their belt, I don't think the scenario you suggest with the 3rd game being pointless, is statistically possible.

Wow, that's a shocker. BBC1 always had bad summers in the mid 90s. A lot of 6-8m ratings in the summer period for BBC1 IIRC while ITV was still banging in 10m+ for its shows.

Yes there was a ratings slump in 1993-94 similar to that endured ten years earlier. Basically BBC One was becoming notorious for drama flops, derivative shows and at times was just plain awful to watch. However, getting the Lottery contract saw them get a guaranteed hit and the schedule around benefitted. Yet I would never say the BBC under John Birt was that inspiring and by the end of the decade BBC One again was being accused of being boring, dependent on cheap formats like vets and makeover shows and on one occasion fell to 1.8 million viewers. It was only when Birt went that BBC One seemed to improve.

Is anyone else confused slightly by ITV1's schedule tonight? If they had two games, I could understand having the News in the middle, but I would have thought a better option would be...

15:00 - Dickinson's Real Deal
15:30 - ITV News
16:00 - Euro 2012 Live
19:30 - Emmerdale
20:00 - Coronation Street
21:00 - Benidorm
22:00 - ITV News

For tonight.

They obviously don't want to run the evening news at 3:30pm in the afternoon, especially as there is quite a lot of disruption to the 'news hour' on ITV this week.

Apparently, there'd been an accounting cock-up, so BBC1 was left very short of new programmes in 1993. As well as repeating 1992 sitcoms, a lot of 1990 and 1991 sitcoms which had been given their traditional second showings in 1992, were repeated again in 1993, which was unusual. And, these sitcom repeats began in mid-February, which was several weeks earlier than usual.

Even the autumn 1993 season had its problems. There were films on Fridays at 9.30pm, instead of drama. And they showed b/w Doctor Who episodes on 7.30pm on Fridays. And there were more films from 7-9pm on Wednesdays.
