The Cruise was also on twice a week, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which was quite a good idea. It felt like a proper BBC documentary, I think it was all on film which made it look quite prestigious. Lakesiders did alright but it seemed a bit contrived, and as even the name suggests they really hyped up the soap bit, with Emma Boundy talking about being jilted at the alter and getting a record deal, which was all a bit tabloid.”

The Cruise Special, just looking at BARB, got 8.8m on Friday 10th July. The Cruise did get 11-12m in January 1998, but I didn't know just how popular these docusoaps were.

Onto Tuesday's ratings, very good audience for Midsomer Murders on ITV3 - offering a good alternative to the football. Great match average for Netherlands v Germany. Quick question - is the England/Ukraine game live on ITV or BBC?

ITV. Their last England game. The Beeb will be hoping it's not THE last.

The FlopZone looks a little different that night. It could feasibly rate 400%+ above slot average.

the ratings maybe good, but chances are it will still be well named, only the flop is on the football pitch (the England team) not in the ratings.

If England get beaten by Sweden and fail to qualify, it could be a football flopzone on Tuesday as ITV will be hoping for England to have to qualify in their final game to deliver BGT final style ratings for them. I often wonder what the ratings will be like if England hammer Sweden, qualify and then play what is like a friendly against Ukraine.

Neither scenario is statistically possible. I said as much when you posted the exact same thing the other day.

So next weekend I will have my drinking night( or one of the two) disrupted by this rubbish. I know it's off topic, but apart from a ratings point of view, the Euros have as much interest to me as watching paint dry. Thanks for warning me in advance about England qualifying.

You'll soon regret that when Wimbledon begins....

BBC1 have exclusive live rights to England in the quarter and semi finals of EURO 2012.

If England reach the EURO 2012 final the match will be shown live on both BBC1 and ITV1 and would most likely become the most watched british tv event of all time

Well not of all time obviously, but it would average 20m+ viewers.

Quote:
“6 Royal Variety Performance 1965 Shirley Bassey, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore 24.20m 14 November 1965 ITV (ATV)”

Top 5 listed as EE. CS, OFAH

With the media hype and excitement in the country if England did actually make it to the final i think across BBC and ITV you would be looking at an average of 30m + viewers.

In fact who in the UK would not watch the England team in the biggest final since 1966

The highest rated program in the UK ever was the World Cup 1966 match between England and Germany (BBC1/BBC2/ITV - 30 July 1966) with an average audience of 32.30 million

Yes I was listing single channel entries. It is unlikely to happen in the next 20 years, we are so far behind other countries, especially at taking penalties.

Lots of people would probably watch it in the pub, which never gets counted. Lots of people aren't interested in sport full-stop. And lots of people in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland probably couldn't give a hoot

Let's be honest here, we're talking about something which has a very slim chance of happening.

Below is a list of the top 5 rated programs in the UK of all time (average audience) - all would have peaked even higher

1 World Cup 1966 (England v. West Germany)
32.30 million
30 July 1966
BBC1/BBC2/ITV

2 Funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales
32.10 million
6 September 1997
BBC1/BBC2/ITV/CHANNEL 4/CHANNEL 5

3 The Royal Family (documentary)
30.69 million
21 June 1969
BBC1/ITV

4 Eastenders
30.15 million
25 December 1986
BBC1

5 Apollo 13 splashdown
28.60 million
17 April 1970
BBC1/BBC2/ITV

The only realistic chance of any of these being beaten in the current environment are probably

England reach final of World Cup/EUROS

Queens funeral

Nuclear war
