The fact is only 1.5 million people watch BB. Papers like The Sun would much rather talk about Simon Cowell, as his shows attract 10 million viewers. To most people BB has had its day.
Actually the rot set in when the tabloids and the celeb mags started treating it as if it was the only show in town and BB started believing its own hype. It steadily became more trashy and unbelievable and ratings started to fall. If it wasn't for the three year deal with Endemol, I'm sure Channel 4 would have cancelled BB after Shilpagate.

Hmm, chicken and egg isn't it? Those ratings don't deserve masses of coverage. The Sun and the Mirror are not going to ignore a show if they believe it will sell papers. People forget that at the start of BB, the first series was derided, until the Nasty Nick thing. Then in BB2 the first winner was signed by the Scum to be a columnist on Survivor which was going to be the BIG reality show.

In BB3 the Mirror decided to be anti-BB, they lost almost as many readers as the then editors Piers Morgan show has lost watchers to CNN.

They had to relent for financial reasons, they don't now, because it doesn't sell 'papers. If it did wouldn't the Star have huge circulation figures?

1.5million is still good for Channel5, theyre not gonna cancel it as long as it rates well for the channel. Geordie Shore only gets 300k but MTV aint gonna cancel that cos thats big ratings for them, same as BB for C5.

The Daily Star is outsold three to one by The Sun and is the least popular of the tabloids. I'm not surprised as it only seems interested in reality shows and Cheryl Cole.

Emmerdale's your latest target then with the usual tired old opinions and the classic take an unusual rating as the norm way of thinking, you've moved on from 'crummy old Corrie'

It's quite funny you are chosing this week of any to complain about number of Emmerdale episodes, it's only be on twice.

Oh don't insult ITV's sacred cows, I suppose you'd defend Emmerdale if its ratings dropped below Home and Away. Come on, I know last night was expected, but the show has been losing viewers for a while. It's tired old tat that is on way too much and has sets like something out of a seventies Australian soap. I think it's symptomatic of all that'w wrong with modern television, flog a show to death, then wonder why it's losing viewers.

Something about US cable: Merlin was the most watched scripted show on Syfy in the first six months of 2012. Here are the overnight avarages:

1.708m - Merlin
1.605m - Eureka
1.446m - Being Human US
1.261m - Sanctuary
1.150m - Lost Girl

Great result for a british show on a US cable channel. Its average was up +14.4% on series 3 and +34% on series 2.

Any ratings for the delayed ITV News at Ten...at Eleven - and the regional news?

Funny isn't it how the England match on BBC One is accused of having poor ratings( 16.5 million is poor, yeah right) and no one comments, but if one of ITV's shows dares to fall and you comment on it, then the ITVistas are out in force. Don't dare insult Corrie( stupid nickname), Emmerdale, the Cowell Shows or any other ITV show as you are taking on the people's channel.
Fact is, apart from decent factual, the odd drama and non football sports coverage, the rest of ITV1's output is abysmal and viewers are voting with their remotes. tat

The England rating is quite underwhelming IMO. I expected the entire coverage rating to be more than 11m, but quite a distance to be honest. And it only peaked 1m higher than Monday's teatime game. Not sure what to expect from Tuesday's game now. It should rate higher. Looks like the Jubilee Concert is safe for a few more weeks at the top of the year to date chart unless England progress further.

As for Emmerdale, what did people expect? I said last week I was expecting perhaps a record low and it wasn't far off (and the lowest for 6 years). How was it ever going to compete with the England match? It wasn't. I watched the match and recorded Emmerdale and watched it earlier today. The rating was very much in line with where I expected it to be and not a shock in the slightest. It will obviously bounce back next week to around 6m.
Thank you

Isn't it funny how when Eastenders pulls awful ratings it gets defended by the BBC fans on here, yet now Emmerdale has a poor rating its because the show is nearing the axe!

Give me ITV any day of the week then the rubbish the BBC offers.

I defend high ratings wherever they come from, but I do think there is a tendency on here for people to strongly identify with a particular broadcaster. Emmerdale has always been the me too soap compared with the two big boys.
However, moving on excellent cable rating for the revived Dallas in America. Remember, this show pulled in a staggering audience of 27 million to fins out who shot JR. Bring Dallas on, it was the soap ever.

Could I also apologise for one thing, I have recently had a very bitter split with my partner recently which has made me very depressed and aggravated by the slightest thing.
Andy 23, I did come round to the football last night as a few mates in the pub were watching and I needed something to cheer me up.

Re, England and Emmerdale....

As for last night, the England peak was poor. Okay, maybe not *poor* but under expectations. Take a look at dave01's post here: http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...postcount=1255

And then look at this for the last decade from 2002 onwards...

England - Euro and World Cup Match Peaks
- 24.7m (??%) - 24/06/04 (Thursday, 19:45) - vs Portugal
- 21.3m (73%) - 19/06/10 (Friday, 19:30) - vs Algeria
- 20.9m (74%) - 20/06/06 (Tuesday, 20:00) - vs Sweden
- 20.9m (72%) - 21/06/04 (Monday, 19:45) - vs Croatia
- 20.7m (73%) - 13/06/04 (Sunday, 19:45) - vs France
- 19.5m (85%) - 27/06/10 (Sunday, 15:00) - vs Germany
- 19.4m (70%) - 12/06/10 (Saturday, 19:30) - vs USA
- 19.0m (84%) - 01/07/06 (Saturday, 16:00) - vs Portugal
- 18.2m (??%) - 25/06/06 (Sunday, 16:00) - vs Ecuador
- 17.1m (??%) - 21/06/02 (Friday, 07:30) - vs Brazil
- 16.8m (??%) - 15/06/02 (Saturday, 12:30) - vs Denmark
- 16.7m (71%) - 17/06/04 (Thursday, 17:00) - vs Switzerland
- 16.5m (76%) - 15/06/06 (Thursday, 17:00) - vs Trinidad and Tobago
- 16.3m (60%) - 15/06/12 (Friday, 20:00) - vs Sweden
- 15.4m (81%) - 23/06/10 (Wednesday, 15:00) - vs Slovenia
- 15.3m (60%) - 11/06/12 (Monday, 17:00) - vs France
- 13.7m (??%) - 02/06/02 (Sunday, 10:30) - vs Sweden
- 13.3m (86%) - 07/06/02 (Friday, 12:30) - vs Argentina
- 13.3m (85%) - 12/06/02 (Wednesday, 07:30) - vs Nigeria
- 12.8m (??%) - 10/06/06 (Saturday, 14:00) - vs Paraguay

You cannot say in the context of the other ratings, viewership and share that the England ratings this tournament have been great like previous years.

As for Emmerdale, in the circumstances, it did fine last night. I'm not sure what else could be expected considering the opposition normally collapses under 2 million against England.

An interesting post, it is certainly down.

Do think there's been less hype about England than I can ever remember, for me it's been quite pleasant not to have the unrealistic burdens put on them, but it does seem to have an affect giving those ratings.

Odd really because it was a pretty exciting match, but maybe that's because both sides weren't very good.

I think the ratings for the Ukraine match will be higher as this is the crunch match. Should England get drawn against Spain in the quarter finals, then expect over 20 million watching.

Thats wrong for a start. It airs Tuesday at 7 which of course is the first episode of the big week. It does at Wednesday for an Hour and Thursday/or Friday for an hour too

The actual Radio Times magazine (at least the one we have) has both ITV and BBC showing Football/No Football alternative schedules for BOTH Thursday and Friday.

EastEnders 7.30 - 8.30 on Thursday or Friday depending on which day has no football on BBC 1.

ITV has Emmerdale 6.50 for half an hour Thursday (if football) or 7.00 for an hour if no football. And exactly the same options for Friday. (So either two episodes Thursday, one Friday or 1 Thursday, 2 Friday - depending on which night football airs on ITV).

Presumably who shows what game will not even be decided until it is known after Monday/Tuesday? That will be why.

Corrie is only on twice - for 30 mins each - on Monday and Wednesday. The second Monday slot is vacated for filler, which has not gone down well in this (or I suspect many other) houses.

Could the England ratings also be a combination of:

the reduced interest in the Euros vs World Cup
not much expectation on the team unlike previous tournaments where everyone was saying anything less than a semi-final was bad and that we have a real good chance of winning.

The fact that it was slightly later on a Friday? More people watching it in pubs?

Also do the ratings include online streaming as both BBC and ITV are streaming games through their players so watching online, while not massive may have reduced it a little.

Well neither will happen but I really don't see why Emmerdale needs a sixth episode - and from a ratings point of view you'd think ITV would rather a sixth Corrie than a sixth Emmerdale.

Emmerdale won't be going anywhere soon though - and neither will EastEnders and Corrie. The only possibility of the ITV soaps going IMO is if ITV somehow goes bankrupt and the channel itself goes - but even then as some of the companies biggest assets I'd expect Corrie at least to outlive ITV Plc.

That figure isn't poor. Objectively it's fantastic. But I agree with Georged123 that is underwhelming. Especially considering what people were expecting after the match last night.

There does seem to be reduced interest in the England team this year though. People appear to be a bit disillusioned.

I think though if they get through to the quarters we'll see some big numbers.

It's definitely down around 4m on the last real comparable figures (group game, last Euros England was in, same kick-off time).

I don't really know why. There is no obvious reason. Figures for the rest of the games have been pretty strong.

Although both those games I'm comparing it to were on a Sunday and a Monday, where you would expect more people to be home.
