Don't forget the 19:00 portion represents 19:00 to 19:15 and then 19:15 represents 19:15 to 19:30.

The 19:30 point on the graph (and the large rise before it) means nothing.

It looks about equal to me in all honesty.

Will people all shut up about which is the best at the Jubilee Coverage, they are all different because they are offering CHOICE!! That is why some prefer one style and not the other... And the ratings will be heavily skewed by the older generation, who don't have twitter to tell them which channel to watch, they just watch their favourite... So it will be very hard to tell what affect the negativity or positivity about a certain channels broadcast is having..

I think if the next big event is the Coronation of King Charles (assuming he keeps the name!) then he has done himself no harm with last nights little turn. Should have hosted the whole thing! Although "mummy" looks like she could well make it to platinum.

Great ratings as expected. Even if The Olympic Ceremony goes on until 1am I can see it being the kind of special event that a lot of people stay up for. I'd also expect some events in the Olympics getting huge peaks (maybe huge averages depending on how it's scheduled). Plus Euro 2012 will get 3 big ratings at least (although that might be all!).

Hopefully whoever is booking the Olympic Opening Ceremony can be a bit more creative than Mr Barlow. Elton, Tom and Paul closing... not again, please!

As usual, there's so much griping and moaning that nobody cares and nobody will watch but the ratings always tell a different story. I expect it to be the same for the Olympics.

Using Zoom x100000 and doing some stuff..........

For ITV:

19:00 - 4.84m
19:15 - 5.18m
=> Average = 5.01m

For BBC:

19:00 - 4.34m
19:15 - 5.51m
=> Average = 4.92m

Although the 5.01m for ITV is tape-checked, but I think The One Show would have been as well.

I think people are being a bit harsh about Sir Paul McCartney closing the Opening Ceremony.

It's not a concert, it's not going to be filled with big names. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the only performer, perhaps during the final fireworks.

And if you're going to have one musician in there, I can't think of anyone more appropriate.

anyway didn't TOS (never has a show had a better acyronym), beat Emmerdale with the Wills & Kate interview in Nov 2010?

Ironically, an ITV interview.

I don't know exactly but approx half the audience (or more?) is over 50. Many middle-aged and older people wouldn't have a clue who Adele is.

Paul McCartney, Elton John etc are part of the fabric of the nation. Adele isn't.

That's why McCartney is top of the bill and quite right to. And the ratings show that is exactly what the public wants.

Ditto Olympics.

Adele has very wisely realised she needs to try and avoid over-exposure.

Millions of middle aged and older people own her album and her songs are played to death on Heart FM or Radio 2 or whatever "older" station they listen to.

I'm not sure the ratings can be used to make that point. They'd have been 17.09m regardless of whether Paul McCartney sang last or Jessie J did!

We don't need to go too modern - I'd not have said Adele to close the show. But Britain has produced some fairly big names over the past 50 years. Nobody is denying Macca's place at the top of the pile. But it does get repetitive especially when we're talking about two events in the space of a month or so!

It doesn't really matter who closes the Opening Ceremony as the ratings are going to be massive anyway. If I might suggest a secondary broadcast on BBC2 showing Adele from outside the Olympic Stadium and see how many viewers switch over or click the red button.

At least PM can always get the crowd going, Adele's two albums appear to be about heartbreak at ages 19 & 21, not what you call Summer party music at all and might have put a dampener on the whole spectacle.

This to me is the highlight of last night's ratings because BBC2 and Channel Five were at least showing repeats, BBC2's was very long as well and Five will always struggle against big opposition, but both Gok and Secret Millionaire were brand new, Gok has been trailed to death and the Secret Millionaire, before they showed a thousand episodes a year, was a massive series for them. I know it's exceptional circumstances but you'd think a banker like that would stand up a bit better.

Also as well, the 8 Out Of 10 Cats repeat seems to have been bolted at 10pm on Mondays now which is a joke, 10pm should be C4's best slot and they shouldn't be showing same-week panel shows repeats there.

This doesn't make sense, you want gravitas then complain it's not relaxed enough. The comparisons are pointless because unless people have three televisions alongside each other they clearly can't be watching the coverage properly ("They haven't done justice to this amazing event that is so important to me that I'm spending the whole time flicking around and tweeting"). And the only people who compare it are TV critics, nobody in real life watches telly like that. Of course the Beeb should have the likes of Fearne Cotton there, it's a fluffy bit of telly, it's not the Queen's funeral.

I do hope that, given his complaints about using news presenters on sports-related events, Brekkie will make the same complaint about the sports presenting likes of Jake Humphrey, Matt Smith and Clare Balding being used for this news event. Or does that only work one way?

I think they're probably told that anyway, what with them being the Royal Family.

Well, it wasn't suspended that much, they still showed Man and Boy, the Tony Parsons drama, for two hours that night, albeit thirty minutes late. And on ITV we had Stars In Their Eyes, Denis Norden's Laughter File and The Premiership all as scheduled. And we only lost Blind Date and the Lottery. That's what gets me about those moans about "all day" Jubilee coverage, do you normally watch telly on a Tuesday afternoon? Switch it off.

Of course the BBC got umpteen complaints when JFK died because they broke the news and followed the agreed procedure and then went back to the schedule within half an hour because the guidelines said that when a foreign leader died they should wait for the Prime Minister's tribute before they did anything else. But the rules didn't differentiate between the Prime Minister of Turkey dying peacefully in his sleep at the age of 102 and JFK being shot, and Rex Moorfoot, the Head of Presentation, got all the blame for not using his initiative and was never, ever promoted because of it (although of course he would have equally got all the blame if he'd decided not to follow the rules and messed up, the moral is it was a thankless decision to make).

I don't see how Adele is officially Britain's Number One Popstar, presumably if this had been a few years ago we'd all have been lobbying for Duffy or Leona Lewis or someone.

Even the Daily Star relegated it to a stamp sized piece on their front page today, with just a page dedicated to it on page 15. It'll almost certainly get it's lowest ever launch figures tonight - they really should have launched it last week. And C5 are just shamelessly rehacking the old C4 twists (tonight's is the same as used on the launch night of BB4) - and not even trying to dress them up as something new.

Launching last week would have been a terrible move, just a few days before it would face the jubilee stuff and The Apprentice final. That would have made no sense at all. Despite the relative lack of hype I am still sensing an opportunity for BB tonight with most of the jubilee related stuff done and dusted. I'm clearly not seeing these great unmissable shows that are apparently going to tempt viewers away on the other channels!

Who cares if it's a twist that's been done before? Most people are not going to remember that far back. And I doubt it will play out exactly the same as last time. The fact is, after this many years it's difficult to keep coming up with new ideas.

All the likes of the X Factor can muster most years is new judge(s), and people don't go "oh, they revamped the panel only last year!"
