AFAIK Kirkwood is working for Lime Pictures again, not sure if his new role would involve Hollyoaks at all. Tbh I think it's very difficult for Hollyoaks. Eastenders and Corrie endure because they keep (or have kept) their audiences for years. The characters span the whole age range and there are plots to keep everyone happy. HO has a far narrower age range in terms of the characters and its audience so it needs to keep renewing which is very difficult. And reaching 16-34's is hard enough anyway. Also, the other 2 started from a higher base. It's tradition and no matter how bad a period they might be having, millions of people will watch. Hollyoaks is scraping by and tbh, always will be. It doesn't seem like long ago that people were saying it had steadied and now its on the rocks again.
The people running Lime have a responsibility to broaden their production slate with new series. Obviously their past was in soaps but there are no signs of any gaps in that genre just now or anytime in the future. The "real drama" thing has worked our extremely well for them - probably more than 30 hours produced in the first half of 2012. Geordie Shore doing over 500k for its first run and more than 1m across the week for MTV (whose next biggest shows don't get a fifth of that!). TOWIE has averaged 1.55m for the year so far. Now it has produced a spin-off and while it's not rating at that level, it still seems like a decent performer.
Any company which focusses on soaps is nuts. There's no room for growth at all - the ones on the air will just keep declining and new commissions are unlikely. Obviously they want to keep Hollyoaks going for as long as possible because it's probably making them good money and in
this broadcast profile they were adamant that they were working to keep Hollyoaks going into the future. But they need more so as when it does get cancelled, they have other things going on. And it's not just TOWIE that's consuming their attention - they've got a kids series with a 20+ hour order from Nickelodeon in the US.
