Tropo videos from 7th & 8th of September
Tropo from Luxembourg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygj8tjqgifU
Rep Of Ireland: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC7HTGFlwNk (Supposed) Brighton pirate station: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92n_mzvKJAw Now that the E skip season is over (apart from maybe the odd surprise appearance), it is back to good old MW & SW dxing for me, although there is always room for more tropo. |

So far I am impressed with the new results. I can get Lincs FM on 102.2 with the RDS coming in and out, Viking FM and BBC Humberside also get RDS. Lincs FM |

At this moment I am receiving France Musique on 88.7 up and down like a yoyo quite unusual considering the weather conditions at the moment.

Looks like tropo is getting a bit better RTBF Classic21 on 93.2 from Bruxelles is giving full RDS. La Pemiere on 96.1 and Pure FM on 101.1 are pretty much noise free. On the hand Lille is rubbish.
I've posted the 7 days nthat I though worthy of recording on FMList - includes some fairly long distance tropo-scatter in poor conditions - the best being the first entry - Wurzburg at 669 km - clear id from web stream - is it really just 5kw? Nice logs Dave.
Conditions have improved here this morning, as anticipated by William Hepburn. NE France is up to summertime levels and Luxembourg is persistent on 100.7 with near fully-quieting peaks. Hopefully this will continue to improve throughout the day. |

Nice logs from me Dave as Ireland has woken up here with leinster/Kippure/Claremont Carn.
I can just about hear France Musique on 88.7 despite the weather being a foggy crisp morning as F/M was better when it was blowing a gale and raining earlier in the week. Conditions have tailed off now so hopefully it will come back at dusk. The plague of RSL's has appeared on 87.7 Radio Hajj from Manchester and there's others to follow until December. Andy |

Capital 95.8 was just fading to weak levels (< 1 bar) which is a sign that something's brewing. Should improve after dark with any luck.

Re my last post the station on 87.5 is not Funky fm as when I checked the online stream it similar but checking again it wasn't.
I then listened to the recording and heard Distint fm (Birmingham) and checked their stream and sure enough it is Distinct fm. It's been some while since I heard this pirate as it used to be received here all the time but I am sure I read that it had gone off air but it's not now. Andy |

A bit lifty here tonight.. Vibes FM on 93.8 has been up to 1 bar on peaks and Contact FM is weak on 93.7. Wrotham and London have also been slightly enhanced. KMFM was in on 96.2 from Tonbridge earlier on.

A few German stations in including one I havnt had before at 103.8. I've also picked up a strong propagation beacon signal from the Netherlands on USB at 144.416. It's PI7CIS from Schevenigen .

No tropo here in central southern England. Not surprising really as it has been gloomy, drizzly and murky all day due to a pesky weather front. Quote:

I think it was pop. Interestingly more german stations are appearing recently and the French and Belgian seem less frequent. I still await my first Danish reception though. Maybe we will get some proper autumnal tropo soon.

Ireland has improved tonight and the usual distant powerhouses Wrotham/Tacolneston/Oxford/Rowridge.
Distinct is present on 87.5 playing what they call music to me it's just noise. Andy |

Germany is increasing in strength here. Einslive on 106.7 is very clear almost stereo and it would appear that 103.8 is WDR4. I thought they were playing pop earlier on but is most definatley easy listening tonight.

QSL letter confirming reception of ORF OE-1 Bregenz
I received a QSL letter today confirming my reception of ORF OE-1 from Bregenz on 93.3 MHz during that amazing tropo in September:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dfa2124...in/photostream http://www.flickr.com/photos/dfa2124...in/photostream Worth keeping for posterity as AFAIK Austria hadn't been received in the UK via tropo on FM before that opening

Some tropo: Tacolneston nationals up to 3 bars on the Kenwood. BBC Norfolk 95.1 up to 1 bar virtually noise-free on peaks.

The Dutch are nicely enhanced again today. Earlier I got LBC 97.3, Kiss 100, Magic 105.4, and Heart 106.2 all noise free. Wow!

Tropo to Belgium/The Netherlands/northern France is really intense at the moment. I logging low power stations with full RDS eg City Music from Gent and Topradio from Staden (100 watts).
Currenlty concentrating on the vertically polarised stations. According to Wm Hepburn's chart - when I accessed it at 6pm - there was a nice little tongue of enhance propagation from my location across to belgium/france - but looking just now its all been update and gone - so I expect it will all fade out soon. Still good while it lasts, David Sittingbourne |

Tropo-scatter changing polarisation
Some time back a question was asked as to whether the polarisation of a signal could be changed by tropospheric propagation.
I have been carefully monitoring the various vertically polarised signals from Belgium and Holland since the question was posed and a reply given that effectively said it didn't happen. My conclusion is that tropo scvatter can cause the polarisation of the signal to be scattered, for want of a better term. Allowing for the fact that a strong signal will be received with the opposite polarisation - albeit much weaker (-20dB according to the book) at times weak signals come in as strong on horizontal as they are on vertical. At other times there is signal on vertical but not on horizontal. Examples: At 18:15 on 12th October (as this is being typed) Omroep Zeeland peaked up quite strongly on 87.9 and switching between antennas was equally good on both hor and vert. On 11 Oct 2012 around 07:05 I made a note that VRT Klara on 90.4 was coming in with full RDS and was 'almost as good on horizontal' and shortly after that VRT1 on 94.2 was 'fairly good on hor'. On 10th Oct around 17:53 I've noted reception of BNR probably from Dreiwegen 'both H/V pretty much the same'. From 9th - 11th I was getting strong signals from the closer continental stations - out to about 350 km. I also find that Nostalgie Vlaanderen on 87.6 is more likely to be received on the horizontal aerial than the vertical. Its listed at around 3kw but is only 150km away in Oostende.. At times I wonder whether the primary Flemish stations are actually mixed polarisation - at other times they are strong on vertical and either very weak or non-existent on horizontal. I can't say I've noticed the reverse with horizontally transmitted signals. Has anyone else made any detailed observations. |

Interesting Dave. I know John (Skywaves) has said that in particularly poor conditions the Dutch signals come in better on his horizontal aerial, but otherwise the polarisation is preserved it seems. Perhaps troposcatter is scattering the signals in such a way that it does change the characteristics, whereas ducting is like extended ground-wave, or a waveguide so doesn't mess with the polarisation.
Have you noticed that the polarisation is as it should be during ducting/tropo? |
