Hi Nick,

I can't give a definite answer to that question - still working on it. I would have said that in good tropo conditions it stays the same - but my notes for the 10th/11th Oct suggest otherwise.

Mind you I would classify the last couple of days as enhanced tropo rather than ducting plus the problem is Belgium and Holland, for me, are probably too close to produce any ducts.

I trying research what's been published about propagation over sea paths - if that has a bearing on things.

Another thing of interest is that in the poor conditions I've had some decent week scatter signal - between 500 and 600+ km. And eraslier today HR1 on 87.6 from Sackpfeife (554km) was appearing from time to time along with RTBF Classic 21 from Leglise (386 km) both relatively weak but strong enough to clearly identify from their webstreams when they peaked. Plus on the same frequency Nostalgie Vlaanderen.

Don't know what has happened but London DAB has stopped working for me the mux with Choice and Heart on.
Though my dad was in the loft the other day so he might have knocked the aerial.

I just put my radio back on for the first time in a month; straight on to Studio Brussel with great signal. Quite surprising since the weather isn't brilliant. Hoping they'll be nice tropo to come.

I was hoping that Sat 20th was going to give some decent tropo as my 'locals' [Egem, Goes, Lille] were giving full RDS on the Sony tuners on some channels during the day and Fr Info from Calais and Radio Extra Gold on 104.8 were coming on on the vertical. But nothing spectacular materialised. Although I did get Poland on MS as 22:16 on 87.7.

Despite continuous rain all night and most of the day I have managed to log a few German stations on tropo-scatter - all weak and intermittent - but peaking enough to allow id from their web-streams.

88.00 WDR5 Bonn 449 km
88.80 WDR5 Langenberg 442 km
89.70 WDR3 Munster 460 km
90.30 WDR5 Nordhelle 487 km
90.60 WDR5 Teutoberger-Wald 560 km
91.60 SWR3 Koblenz 490 km
96.50 DR Kultur Langenberg 442 km

Logged between 17:00 and 17:30 BST.

I'm hoping for some MS reception from the Orionids that are supposed to peak after midnight - I'll leave the setup on overnight I think and see what happens.

Currently listening to WDR 4 Teutoburger Wald on 100.5 with a good mono signal. WDR 1Live from Münster has been in too.

Yes signals are picking up quite nicely in the south-east corner of England.

The 'usual suspects' from Langenberg and Aachen Germany are giving noise free signals with full RDS - getting better as the evening progresses. I'm also getting very clean WDR5 on 90.6 from Teutoberger Wald.

The more local Egem (150 km) is giving good stereo on 98.6, 100.1 and 102.1, Klara is a bit noisy on 90.4. St Pieters Leeuw (250 km) is pretty good too. [[And as an added bonus - Radio Extra Gold on 104.80 is coming through quite strongly from Koksijde - only 133km - but it is just 1 kw]]

No it's not Radio Extra Gold - I was looking at the non-RDS Yamaha - just tuned in on the Sony - it's actually HOL Radio 1 from Roermond. with RDS.

Still I've just logged Radio Extra Gold on 105.8 with pi code 63E9 from Koeklare - 160km and a power of 200 watts. So signals are still peaking.

Signals are picking up a little here too, I'm currently listening to Radio 538 and Heart battle it out on 102.7, several other Dutch stations are fading in and out too!

Yes it's nice tuning through the band hunting for distant signals on a traditional analogue tuner (I'm using the Yamaha T-2). Much easier to assess the state of the band, as virtually all digital synthesised tuners mute whilst tuning. It seems to be a bit more selective than the T-85 as well, which is a very nice surprise

Let's hope it continues to build overnight.

Nice - I remember reading your post when you got it - did you post that it has a digital frequency read-out?

As for tropo - I've a nice clear, but slight noisy WDR5 on 99.7 from Kleve - only listed as 2kw.

Yes it does have a digital frequency readout as well as the pointer & dial but the readout is about 50kHz high. The pointer is accurate across the scale though.

There is an option to mute whilst tuning if you want but it only finds the stronger signals that way so is not a mode conducive to DXing!

A funny coincidence: I am hearing WDR 1Live on 107.9, and the programme is 'Eins Live Kassettendeck' - the very same programme that several of us heard on the same station on the same frequency during that huge tropo in October 2010. This time though, the signal is weak with a lot of fading. In 2010 it was strong!

Tropo mainly to Belgium & NE France this morning with a good signal from Classic 21 on 99.1 at present. There have been a couple of Germans about as well. Late last night Luxembourg was doing well on 100.7.

Just out of interest has anyone picked SWR3 from the Hornisgrinde transmitter on 98.4 recently?

I have visited that area a few times, it is a very high site and there is very attractive lake to visit nearby

Lots of stations from all over, mainly the South East and London are enhanced, along with some Dutch and French ones, this is weird though, on my Vertical FM3 I can get some French stations 103.7 and 106.2 for instance, and on my fathers dipole mounted Horizontally I can get Dutch stations, I thought a Horizontal antenna couldn't get the Dutch stations?

I picked that one up during that fantastic tropo lift of 6-7 September Mike. It was quite a good signal as I recall. It does look like an area with spectacular scenery.

Tropo this evening with good condx to SE England and N France. No Germans at present but I hope they will return later.

On the way to and from work I listened to Radio 538 on 102.7 (from Rotterdam, I think?) complete with changing RDS. The RDS included a phone number, and what appeared to be road numbers followed by abbreviated words - traffic report probably. Not sure if it's a good idea getting people to look at the radio while they're driving.

Grrrrrrr, lucky you!! I can get 538 but it's pretty weak, the numbers are for flitsers or speed cameras, it show's you where they are.

I have been receiving France all day from various tx's and still am and looking at the Hepburn charts show tropo moving west so it looks like reception will be more southerly.

Wrotham/Tacolneston/Oxford are acting like locals here 0 BER on RDSspy Rowridge is not present at all but that may change tomorrow.

Oh well it didn't last. It was gone about 15-20 minutes after that post.

Still some good signals from France and Belgium and some German talk just now on 101.9, probably WDR 5.
