Excellant catch. It does happen thanks to a double hop off the E layer but it need a path of darkness across the Atlantic. Winter is the best time for trans Atlantic AM reception
I understood it was due to the F layer.
MW DX also benefits from low solar activity. The future solar minimum should bring MW DX to life.

Some think its double hop off the E layer or the nighttime F layer. Could be combination of them both. Solar minimum and winter nights are the best for trans Atlantic MW DX.

Somewhere on You Tube a Medium Wave dxer using a Lowe receiver in Germany picked up some transatlantic dx so its possible even further east than our east coast.

Strange then that Marconi claims the have heard Poldhu in Newfoundland on 500 to 800 kHz when it was daytime. Also given the very crude and very insensitive receiver he had many think he faked it. MW DX is via double hop E layer or chordal hop E layer. F layer would be single hop and singnals would be much stronger. Best DX I heard was Venezuela. The reason MW is poor in the day time is the the D layer is heavily ionised and tends to absorb and not reflect.

There's quite a good FM dx machine on eBay at the moment, the Sony XDR s3hd. I admit I do have a connection to the seller.

Well it looks good so far. Some nice tropo this morning to northern France, Luxembourg, a bit of Belgium and even Switzerland (Säntis 105.6 earlier this morning and Rigi/Kulm 90.9 more recently). The main area of tropo isn't forecast to arrive until tomorrow so hopefully just a taste of what's to come.

Is anyone else getting much?

It's been patchy and very on & off but currently I have WDR 4 on 100.5 fair/good mono. This and one or two other signals from Germany have been popping up every now & then today.

Fingers crossed it picks up properly tonight.

I was on the Isle of Mull, Scotland , last week. FM reception of main stations very good. AM reception very poor during daytime and radio 5 on 693 and 909 almost inaudible.
No trace of Absolute on 1215. Radio4 on 198 poor-Altantic 252 better. After dark everything changed and France Info on various freqs, Lux on 1440 and Spain on 585 came in loud and clear.Radio Scotland on 810 a bit mushy -presumably as a result of having two distant transmitters.

A few minutes ago I had operatics on 87.7 and 87.9 both in parallel with MDR Figaro's web stream. 87.7 must be Chemnitz at 997 km, which I think is a first for me. It was only very weak but I hope this continues to intensify overnight.

I think Radio 1 on 97.1MHz is from the Channel Islands.
