Wow that's even more impressive!

Those signals from Bregenz are going up to 2 bars on the Denon. I also logged 102.1 ORF FM4 and 106.5 Antenne Vorarlberg.
I am just blown away by how good the audio is compared to anything in the UK. I'm always complaining about DAB audio quality but this is fantastic for original flavour DAB at 192 kbps - why the hell doesn't UK DAB sound like this.

Here's another recording of SWR1, I have just realised that there must be something local affecting the signal as it's 4 blocks past the minimum so should be perfect reception, but there must be something close by that is keying up and knocking the signal back from 100 % down to 15 %.

I have just got BBC Radio Devon on 103.4 in the Doncaster area trying to wipe out Radio Hallam for the first time. That's the furthest station that I have managed to receive so far.

A foggy morning here....

A few highlights so far today:

RDS from Luxembourg on 100.7

Classic 21 on 99.1

Something German on 88.9- no RDS, speech based

French/Belgian French all over the band- Radio 2 from Crystal Palace on 88.8 is wiped out- that's almost a local here.

It's only a home made dipole.

After this I am seriously thinking about setting up a couple of phased 5 element beams and getting a DAB+ tuner.

I can't do any dx'ing on Band II because of the London pirates, but maybe DAB is another option - I have plenty of ally tubing so I feel some DAB aerial construction is on the list of things to do.
Hi KnobTwiddler,

Here in Lincolnshire, we are lucky not to suffer pirate stations on Band II, as you do in London. Pirate interference was just as bad when I lived in the West Midlands!

I have a Triax 5 element Band III aerial, which of course is suitable for DAB reception. It's now in my loft, pointing towards Doncaster.

When we had a big "lift" a few months back, I managed to receive a Danish MUX (with audio) and a German MUX (without audio). Presumably, the German MUX was using DAB+, which my all-in-one Panasonic mini system is not capable of resolving.

You've certainly given me the idea to set up a rotatable, outside aerial and get hold of a DAB+ tuner. Looks like it might prove fruitful.

Chris.

Bloody hell! At around 20.45 last night I heard SWR 3 on 98.4 from Hornisgrinde - on a tiny radio with just the earphone cord as an antenna!

I can go one better with Germany on DAB - unfortunately my Pure Evoke -1 is not DAB+ so no audio.

Sorry about the poor pictures they were taken with an iPod.
No problems - That's all we're going is shoving a camera in front of a radio, we're not exactly trying to take pictures of the London Eye now are we?

As for last night - My HBBNorthants on 10D died around 2.20am (I was listening to MKFM) with the Oxford Mux dying shortly after.

For a few minutes around 10pm I was able to 'get' the Berkshire Mux on 12D, but wasn't able to tune in to any stations

On the way home from work in Birmingham, at about 5pm, I received Nation Hits from Swansea on 102.1 on the M5 near Bromsgrove.

Some Germans are on the band again this evening, still from a generally similar area to yesterday. Not as intense though. Bavaria on the band for what must be the 3rd day in a row now. Best catch so far today was Ochsenkopf (Bayern 3 on 99.4) near the Czech border.

Luxembourg still in, but weaker this evening. Pure FM Wavre on 101.1 with RDS. No hint of anything German tonight. Still a fair selection of French stations

The Austrian 144 MHz station was using Single Sideband.. I think 400 Watts.

I think there have been 2 way contacts between Ireland, North and South with Austria and Czech Rep.

That is good. I have picked up Somerset Sound on 95.50 down in Cornwall on the car radio during lift conditions.

Hi, Does anybody know when the next radio atmospherics are due in the UK? It was good this Monday into Tuesday just gone. It was incredible how I got BBC Devon on 103.4 FM on my little MP3 player near the Scunthorpe area when I am about 300 miles from the Devon transmitter.

Many thanks

It's not something that you can predict with any certainty, but this site is worth checking out for propagation forecasts, but remember it's not gospel only a rough guide.

Tropospheric ducting (which is what you experienced this week) is caused by temperature inversions which are mostly associated with a high pressure system over the country.

Also fog can cause ducting through valleys or along rivers, although this tends to enhance medium range signals. The longest distance reception is caused by Sporadic E (known as Es) conditions which tend to peak in the Spring or early Summer period, with another peak around Christmas time, but in reality Sporadic E can happen at any time of the year - again it's not something that you can predict.

It looks like you have caught the Dx bug, it's a great hobby and I hope you will enjoy it.

Hi, thanks for the information. I will look on the website more to see when the atmospherics will come and go. It is a great hobby and this is what makes FM radio good. Thank you once again.

There's some good tropo here today. Luxembourg, NE France and Hornisgrinde 98.4 were in this morning. Now a big lift to NE France and parts of Belgium. Hirson is 3 bars on 94,4, 97.2, 99.7 and 101.3!

Got the following with RDS an hour of so ago:

88.7 France Musique (Lille)
92.3 RTBF Vivacite (Andelues)
92.7 France Inter (Lille)
93.7 Contact FM (Calais)
94.7 Bleu Nord (Lille)
95.6 Classic 21 (Liege)
96.6 Pure FM (Andalues)
98.0 France Culture (Lille)
99.1 Classic 21 (Andalues)
101.1 Pure FM (Wavre)
103.7 France Inter (Lille)
105.2 France Info (Lille)

plus quite a lot under the noise as well. Interesting that 103.7 is favouring Lille- my aerial points directly towards Guildford, which caries Kane FM on 103.7. Nothing from Luxembourg today- Heart is coming in from Sutton Coldfield on that frequency.

As my previous post but more signals from Belgium to add to the mix e.g. St. Pieters Lieeuw, Bruxelles 93.2 and 99.3. Also Langenberg (95.1. 106.7) and Donnersburg (105,6) 1 bar in strength. Of course SE England is massively enhanced too so the band is completely jammed. Some signals have co-channel mush.

I never expected anything as good as this!
