Cat smell!

Hi there

I have an open brick porch leading up to my front door, however one of the local neighbourhood cats keeps resting in there

This means that I have an awful cat smell there and it stinks to high heaven.

Any suggestions about how I could get rid of the smell?

Cheers!

Cut an onion in half and put on a saucer in the porch , its grreat for absorbing a smell and maybe the cat wont like it and take off .! Dont make it comfortable for him to come back .,

Place a snare in your porch. Bait it with fish or a bowl of milk. Hey presto, no more unwanted cat visits.

After this, you can turn your attention to getting rid of the smell. The half onion idea is a good one, though not sure how effective it is against the stink of a cat.

Looks like a cat has sprayed the brickwork. To get rid of the smell get a bowl of soapy water and clean the bottom half of the bricks with a brush and rinse off with clean water. My dustbin outside is regularly sprayed by a black tomcat and at least once a week I have to do this. You can buy a solution which neutralises the smell but I can't remember the name.

I hope you are joking about the snare My cat went missing for 3 days and returned home close to death with a snare tight about her throat. Thankfully she had somehow managed to pull it out of the ground. Snares, especially the illegal ones without a stop on them are utterly barbaric.

Cats themselves don't smell, they are very clean animals, but if there is one urinating or spraying there, it will smell. However, unlikely they would urinate and sleep in the same place, they are very fussy about their own odours. You sure it's not a fox odour you have? They have a very strong smell that would be left behind.

Thanks for the tips LOL I am not sure about the onion, I was kind of hoping for a non-smell in the porch.

It is definately a cat smell and to make it worse I have a cat allergy and the smell makes me want to vomit too.

I may try urinating, however a bit worried that the neighbours will think I am completely odd.

Scrubbing the walls down with soapy water sounds like the best option.

It gets so bad that I can no longer have an outdoor door mat in the porch

Tasty Delight - I have exactly the same prob. I spent over an hour the other week removing all the cr*p next doors cats make in my big containers. I had to scrub the porch out with disinfectant and wash down the front door where they had done their business and then scrapped all earth up to try and cover it. They also scrapped up loads of bedding plants so I've had to replace them. It is SO anoying.

My Mum used to swear by Jeyes fluid but then that makes your whole porch stink nearly as bad as cats pi** and it's not very nice for visitors.

I have put down loads of slug pellets (they're a pain too) and it says on the pkt that there is an animal deterrant in them. I have also stuck loads of old knitting needles and kebab skewers in all my pots now.

If this doesn't work I will leave the boot of my car open and if their cats get in I will take them for a very long drive and let them out in some woodland miles away where they can poo to their hearts content.

Hope your joking, because if not, then that is bloody cruel. What is it with people on this thread? First someone said put a snare down, now you joke about dumping a cat somewhere, miles from its home. I get the gist that some people dont like cats, but all these threads end up with hated towards cats, with possible cruel ways to get rid of them.

Please let's not encourage cat abuse or catnapping.

Op, there is some stuff called "urine off" and you can spray and leave and it gets rid of the smell.

Pets at home do one too which is cheaper. Might be worth an Internet search.

Not a good idea, unless you want to be a cat poisoner.

Jeyes contains Phenol (Carbolic Acid), which is poisonous to cats.

Don't use bleach, use something lemony to clean it, then spray citronella oil or lavender oil to repel it.

I honestly didn't know that Bob. My mother used it for all outdoor jobs - cleaning bins, concrete areas etc. Are you sure it does contain Phenol because if so, why are they still selling it because it is intended for all outside jobs.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek when I said that but it is tempting. The mess that these 2 cats are making on my property is awful.

I do know someone who enticed a very noisy cockerel from a neighbouring smallholding and left it out in the countryside.

My other neighbour called round this afternoon and she has just been digging her garden and she says there's fresh cat poo everywhere.

The people the cats belong to don't have a garden and I doubt whether they have litter trays either.

Maybe cat owners could advise us people how we should discuss this with our neighbours because I don't want to fall out with anybody but I honestly don't see why I should have to clean up mess that their pets make in my garden and porch.

There are a few products out there to neutralise the smell. Soapy water will only make it worse. We found that out ourselves. The stuff we used was called, and I kid you not, Urine Off. If you go to Amazon and do a search you will find it. A bit pricey but it does work. Good luck.

It's perfectly safe, provided it is thoroughly washed away.

The risk is if some is left behind (eg. a pool of it is left), and a cat treads or lies in it.

I have looked at the Jeyes site and they recommend it for washing out kennels and other pet areas and they also give dilution instructions, which is what I meant when I suggested it. Obviously I didn't mean to suggest anybody should use it neat.

Thanks for drawing this to my attention though.

Try planting a few of these in your pots/garden

Apparently cats can't stand the smell of it !

Cats hate citrus smells. Squirt some lemon juice around the area. Maybe that'll help ?

This sort of thing is a good idea.

Though you should send the bill for anything you purchase to the cat's owner. You shouldn't have to be out of pocket in order to keep their pet from invading your property.

They have been in my window box again overnight and shat amongst the flowers. How they manage it I don't know because I have knitting needles and kebab skewers sticking up all along.

How is it going Tasty Delight?

I've been to the garden centre and asked what they had to get rid of cats and the guy said "well we don't sell shotguns although we do have lots of gardeners who would like one."

I settled for a plant (Scaredy Cat) which cats are supposed to hate and was recommended by someone above. Thanks.

I also spent £15 on new bedding plants because the cats ruined mine and a squirty bottle of "Get Off" which I have sprayed liberally on the porch steps and on the outside of the window boxes. Here's hoping!
