What's scrobble?

“Scrobbling a song means that when you listen to it, the name of the song is sent to Last.fm and added to your music profile.

Once you've signed up and downloaded Last.fm, you can scrobble songs you listen to on your computer or iPod automatically. Start scrobbling yourself, and see what artists you really listen to the most. Songs you listen to will also appear on your Last.fm profile page for others to see.

Millions of songs are scrobbled every day. This data helps Last.fm to organise and recommend music to people; we use it to create personalised radio stations, and a lot more besides.”

There ya go

I don't get it, what's so wrong with it? It just counts your plays doesn't it?

It's so much more. It allows you to build a library of the music you listen to and share your tastes with everyone.

I wouldn't worry, there are far more destructive addictions.

But why is it driving people insane? It sounds like a really useful tool to have.

Well I was at the stage I wouldn't listen on my music centre - ONLY laptop, as songs listened to away from laptop/ipod wouldn't be logged and recorded for no-one in particular to look at. Ridiculous!!

It is very useful when discussing music with fellow fans.

I've had this problem for such a long time that it made me delete Last Fm! I'd listen to my ipod all day, go to sync it and like one song would scrobble I got pretty OCD about it too, I only find it's good for discovering new music.

I totally love last.fm, though I agree - the scrobbling can become a bit obsessive! For instance, when I listen to a song on Youtube or somewhere else that doesn't scrobble, I always feel like I have to then listen to the same song on somewhere that does scrobble just so that I get the play count for it Honestly though, I could never delete it - I don't know what I'd do without it! It's such a great site, for so many different things

Well ok, I know that there are utilities that can do such things, but I know I would still be selective of what I wanted to scrobble!
