Kylie at Jubilee concert, lip sync?
As a fan of Kylie's I'm really concerned with that "technical error" that happened seconds before her performance.
If you go at the 12:00 minute of the video below you will hear Kylie's voice singing a small part of Step Back in Time out of nowhere (she hasn't even appeared on stage at this point). Then at 15:42 she sings the exact part that was heard out of nowhere before (and in the exact same way). I don't get it. She sounded live and moved the microphone away from her mouth freely (whereas someone with a pre recorded track wouldn't risk moving the mic away from their mouth). Anyone have a reasonable explanation? VIDEO (the specific video is out of sync so, obviously, that's not what I'm referring to): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGskYM5Ls08 |

Backing track. The majority of artists now prerecord a backing track to enhance their performance. It also means artists who do dance routines are able to take a breather when needed without sounding as if they are panting.

Backing track played too soon, probably. Why perform such a weak vocal on a lip sync? She sings live and you can tell because she's not much good at it, but she at least works for her wages.

I think they were doing a sound test backstage and it got broadcast accidently. Kylie certainly wasn't miming.

But isn't a backing track supposed to be played along with the performer singing? That specific part of the song was supposed to be just her (there's even no music playing)
. Hope that answers your question.

No you could tell when she was doing Acapella and she pulled the mic away she may not be the best vocally but she does sing live.

I was there. She didn't lyp-sinch (nobody did actually!), she was using a backing track and indeed there were regular sound tests as they had technical issues with the mics right from the beginning of the event. In fact the warm-up act had to perform their set with half of the mics getting dead in the middle of their performance
. Hope that answers your question.Quote:

This has been the only argument that's convinced me. So are you saying that slips like that happened to other acts as well (cause I only heard one in Kylie's case). By slips I mean mic testings.
I know, I know. Like I said I'm a fan. I was just concerned. I've seen her tours and performances on talk shows and know how great she is. I wasn't trolling |

Yes it happened to other acts as well - Robbie Williams when he opened the show, Jessie J, Cheryl Cole and JLS. Also bare in mind that the performers didn't have much space and/or time for their changes and didn't have much if any backstage area. From where I was I could see whoever was on next getting ready to appear on stage (by that I mean testing mics, checking things with the technical staff etc.). It seems they were aware of that and they're really professional about it.

Thanks so much for all this info. I walked by the stage a few days ago (they were having rehearsals) and it indeed seemed really small to hold all those acts/dancers/musicians.
As for the info about Kylie's slip, you're very welcome

She was definitely live.
If you listen the words "funky music" sound a LOT smoother backstage than they do live as when she's live it sounds like you can hear her spitting into the microphone and the overall tone of her voice is a lot harsher and panty. I've made a little comparison video, I'm just putting it on youtube now

Kylie very rarely lipsynchs these days, simply because her voice is now good enough that she doesn't need to. The only two times I can remember her doing it (apart from TV shows like TOTP where lipsynching is the norm) was at The Brits in 2002 and also at the Olympic Games in Sydney, whereby both times she lipsynched to pre-recorded "sounds live" vocals. This was back in the day it wasn't akin to murdering children on stage, mind you.
For the record, Kylie has never lipsynched on tour. EVER. Not even during the Disco In Dreams tour/Hitman roadshow. She got slated for allegedly miming on the "Kylie On The Go - Live in Japan" TV special but someone somewhere chose to overdub her live vocal with the studio vocals for the TV broadcast. That was especially annoying since the vocals weren't even all that bad - and I have a VHS copy somewhere to prove it. She'll never have the lungs to be able to sing like Adele and I know she's not everyone's cup of tea, but the girl *can* sing. Which is why that f*** up with the sound is so very annoying indeed, since ultimately people will end up pointing their fingers and going, "see... told you she was rubbish". |

I love the fact Kylie sings live. I personally think she sounds brilliant live and have seen her twice now. Both times I was really impressed. There are some acapella clips on Youtube from some of her live shows and they are pretty impressive.
Critics don't seem to be quite as harsh about her vocals now as much as they used to though which is great. She was one of the (very few!) highlights of the Jubilee concert. |

I think she's proven that she's a capable producer, writer singer and even composer (for impossible princess). Like you said, she's not Adele but she doesn't claim to be. Also, having a better voice doesn't always mean a song is better. Look at the HURTS version of Confide in Me and Kylie's version. Sure, the HURTS version has stronger vocals but Kylie's voice is much more suited for the theme and meaning of the song (which is meant to be vulnerable yet seductive). Plus, vocally, Kylie smashed that song in her North American tour. People should see this and then tell me she can't sing... |

I don't particulary like Kylie's voice even though i love her music because it's a bit too nasally and not very strong imo. However, she sounded good at the Jubilee concert and it sounded live to me?!
Tbh i don't get too hung up about whether singers are singing live or not if they're doing quite energtic performances. |
