Worried about hamster

Hi,

Got a little syrian hamster (pickles) who's about 9 months old.

She has been getting diarrhea the last week a lot (she has a cage with see through piping) it looked quite bad on Tuesday.

I rang an emergency vet who couldn't do alot because of the holiday, I have read about wet tail, which worried me, so to keep an eye on her I put her in a smaller cage without pipes etc....

The thing is she is still VERY lively and drinking water and eating properly.

Can hamsters just get diarrhea from time to time or should I be worried ?

Hi

Is your hamster getting any greens or is she just eating dry food? Sometimes eating fruit & veg can upset their tummies & cause them to have diarrhoea. The fact she is lively & drinking is good as she will be keeping hydrated.

Is it definitely diarrhoea that she has got or could it be a discharge from her back end?

Aww poor hammy. These small furries do go downhill really quickly so it might be best to get her checked out by a vet to see if there is anything up with her. Seems strange that she has an upset tummy just on dry food though and if nothing has changed in her diet.

Reason I was asking if it was definitely diarrhoea is in case it's a discharge from her uterus (pyometra) as I've heard of small furries having that before but not seen it myself, or even an infection of some sort.

Let us know how you get on & hope she gets better soon

I think you can rule out wet tail, it mostly effects young hamsters and mostly when they have been stressed out too much which is why you have to leave them for 2 days to get used to their surroundings.

have you changed hamster food brands recently? sometimes that can cause problems if its changed too quickly.

Hi,

Well I think it must of been a bug! she was her usual crazy mischevious self last nite running a short marathon around her tubes and generally having a whale of a time, not seen anymore diarrhea so something must of just upset her tummy.

Thanks for everyones replies
