The encryption flag, I'm almost certain, is not set, else my Freesat box wouldn't have picked them up without me telling it to search for encrypted channels.

On another forum someone said these channels first appeared as numbers before being given proper names which suggests this is just a transponder move.
Not true about being numbered, could be a transponder move though, there's been lots of changes lately!

True about encryption flag, I'm using a Technomate TM5402-HD with a Sky card!

Had chance to check myself too, yep definitely no encryption flag set on any of them. I suppose with the sort of stuff Challenge and Pick TV put out there's no real rights issues, same with S4C which is on a widebeam Txp.

I'm just amazed they are both still FTA, surely this must be a mistake unless they are going to defy belief and put them on Freesat??

My box describes the channels as 'Free TV', whereas Men&Movies+1, Travel&Cruise channels (and a few shopping channels) altough FTA are being described as 'Pay TV'.

Even with Sky Entertainment, you'd need a DVB-T card to get Yesterday (which is only on Sky Entertainment Extra)!

Like everyone else I am assuming this is an error and these will be encrypted again by the end of the week.

But it does seem a little weird that the two channels they accidentally in error turn the encryption off for are their two FTA channels on DTT. The fact that its those two channels does make a tiny percentage of me wonder if this is intentional.

Plus that they're two channels that don't seem to be technically related in any way. And in both cases the +1s are FTA as well. It's all very weird... I'm hoping beyond hope that they ARE doing something intentional, as I'd love to be able to record the Star Trek they've started to show without getting my HTPC up and running again...

I assume it is intentional for the reason you have given.
It's would be too much of a coincidence for just these 4 channels that have gone FTA by accident.

Can it be a coincidence that Sky dumped the Sky 3 branding for Pick TV? As suggested on another thread maybe it was always the eventual intention to sell off both Pick & Challenge TV, which maybe has occured - perhaps to UKTV or CBS/Zone?

Sky won't sell these channels. They're cheap to run and are stuffed full of promos for Sky's pay channels, acting as a shop window for DTT viewers. The Sky 3 branding was probably dropped because it was an embarrassment to have the Sky brand attached to a channel showing old repeats of Airport/Road Wars and not much else. Pick TV has now started improving again with some recent Sky 1 shows added to the schedule.

It has been for quite some time, though, hasn't it?

Was watching around 12:55am last night, and Challenge went under encryption for roughly 2 seconds then opened again. But as of now, all still on

Just tune to Challenge on your Sky box, it's already there. If it's not showing up, reboot the box.

I was surprised, having watched the Pick TV channel for the first time (not having Freeview, only Freesat) how many channels they promote, not just the Sky owned channels but other ones that are available on SKY, and which you never see any promos for on regular Free[view|sat] TV.

It makes you aware of all the channels youre "missing".

I wonder if the two channels will come to Freesat proper and appear on the EPG like they do on Freeview. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. On the one hand, Pick TV seems like a not too bad channel - andd it seems to have improved recently - but on the other, I'm not sure I want it tempting people to get Sky!

Even if they do stay FTA, I doubt they'll appear on Freesat. Sky News isn't on Freesat despite being FTA, after all.

Whilst they don't want to be seen to promote rival Freesat by directly joining it, perhaps these channels are going free to air so that Freesat viewers can pick them up in non-Freesat mode and then be bombarded with the unsubtle Sky sell in the ad breaks on Pick and Challenge to entice them to join Sky.

I wouldn't be so sure, Sky News not being on Freesat might be evidence of the old, 'nasty' Sky, maybe we are going to get a new nice & generous, inclusive Sky now?

Maybe if it realizes it might get made into handbags if it doesn't play nice.
