Surprised LS and the interviewers didn't ask Tom one very important question

What is the net profits of your business over the past 5 years?

Tom kept going on about having a turnover of millions but we all know form Dragon's Den turnover is only part of the story . A business can have a turnover of millions but not provide a worthwhile living for it's owners.

Profits have gone from £3K the first year (2008) up to £150K in the previous year (pre-tax profit), so it is safe to say he isn't doing too bad. Profits numbers are not as spectacular as the turnover numbers, hence why he keeps on talking about turnover only.

Thanks giorgoxxi. Would you happen to know his profit after tax and what year are we referring to?

The post-tax profit for 2011 was £120K. From that, £105K was paid in dividends to the shareholders (Tom 87.5% and his dad 12.5%).

Cult Wines used to trade as Burgundy Cellar Ltd which was dissolved in 2008.
Do you know why it was dissolved and was Tom's dad also a director of that company?
Thanks.

From the numbers, Burgundy Cellar was not doing very well. It peaked around 2005 (around £100K gross profit) and then went downhill and was making losses in its last year, which is why I suppose it was dissolved.

Tom's dad was the director of that company. He has been involved in other wine companies as well, all dissolved.

Maybe I am being too judgemental, but from what I've seen and read on some blogs, I wouldn't trust the Gearing's with a single penny!
